Andrew,

Don't try throwing the stuff back at Linz, he likes it too much :-)! If I ever get really angry with Linz (as opposed to just being pissed off), I'll put a bunch of articles in the queue about quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and self-regulating systems and such. Oh, no! That's right. You're the editor now!

Well, I think the air is beginning to clear. Most of us know how important this time is in the life of SOLO. I think Barbara and Linz will work things out eventually if they give each other a little space. In the meantime here is how I call people names: Linz you are a *&*^*^(*&&$#$# and furthermore your (**&%%%*(*& is *(U*(&*&&%!!!

There, I feel better already! And how can anybody argue with this? Linz: "I am not a *&*^*^--or what did you say?"

Linz said in his post #26
Brant - as it happens, it fell to me to pass the above through the moderator's queue.

Is it true that after Brant posted his "last post", he was put under moderation already?? I see his last several posts were all under moderation. Is this what happened with all others as well? This certainly is a solo policy that I am not aware of.

Everything I've written has been posted as I have written it. I suppose that after I do ten posts since my "last" post the moderation will disappear. I don't think the powers that be are afraid I will say something nasty. They probably just wanted to know when I started posting again if I ever did. Say I came back three years from now. But I don't know and don't care. Like I said, everything is going through as far as I can tell.

Yes Hong, I place people under moderation after they say they're leaving.  I'm not a big fan of grandstanding, and we get a lot of that.  If someone says they're leaving, I take them at their word, and won't let them have it both ways.

And no, I don't do that to everyone.  Sometimes I invalidate their accounts entirely.

Okay, Rowlands, I'm putting you on notice.

I shall leave -- leave, I tell you!!! -- unless you immediately explain the meaning of this symbol beneath your photo:

You have been warned!

Robert, you have to pay more attention.  I did an Executive Update explaining everything!

We'll have a lot of opportunities for you to get some of your own.

Yes Joe, I was grandstanding, albeit only in part. I did not say I was leaving SOLO, however. I continued to read and sanction posts and send SOLO mails. And, yes, there is a lot of grandstanding on SOLO, but it is hard to objectify this aspect of self-assertion or to generalize it as a negative. The problem is grandstanding and self-assertion are intertwined and SOLO is zip without self-assertion.

You just need to wear a black cape and wave around a cigarette holder to make it really work. ;)

Atlas shrugged is a total grandstand, which is one reason it is the greatest novel ever written or that will ever be written, though not the primary reason.

Brant,

I agree with you. But look what John Galt made a grandstand against - altruism, mysticism, collectivism, irrationality and theft of the wealth created by producers, and that's just for starters. Conditions also were stipulated for returning - one of the basic ones being respecting the ownership rights of producers to what they produce.

I have a real hard time relating that to posters leaving Solo in a huff.

It's saddening to read yet another thread like this on SOLO.

Having met Jennifer in person a few months ago, and found her to be the very model of what SOLO seemed to me to be about, my only comment is that I have a very hard time making sense of some of the statements being made about her on this thread.

Barbara - thank you for once again speaking your mind so eloquently.

Daniel, that's right, I can't know that Atlas is the greatest novel that will ever be written, but I can think that for various reasons. And it is important to acknowledge that to describe a novel that way is ultimately a subjective evaluation. Just like calling someone a genius.

Michael, the trick is to think in principles here. We can apply lessons from Atlas that way to even small matters of day to day existence. Otherwise it'd be a pretty worthless book. I merely used the best example I could lay on to to illustrate my point.

I'll grant you the principles, Brant. I agree completely.

The main Objectivist principle I can see to apply here - and even give proper grounds for making a grandstand exit - is sanction of the victim.

Those who left gave me the impression that they considered themselves to be victims - either directly or indirectly - and decided not to provide their sanction anymore by posting on Solo. Then they made grandstand exits to make sure that the evil oppressors and those left behind knew why.

But then isn't it incumbent on them - that is, if they are really interested in this activity, which would be a reasonable assumption because of the grandstand - to put together a better Objectivist Internet forum?

After all, the cost to get started can't be that prohibitive. All you really have to do is be competent, be a high achiever, have a first-hand soul, use reason as your guide, be tirelessly committed, be... ahem...

sort of like Linz, Joe, Jeff and a huge number of posters on Solo...

Michael
