I agree with Jody, I have already been making plans to attend. Hope we are all still on for Florida in May.

     Holy Cow !

ONLY 4 days, and this site becomes the Titanic?

Clearly, there's some iceberg under the (obviously hole-filled) rationale's given; but, definitely your decisions. Ok. Whatever. I'll miss this place, and many here (some of whom I suspect may not change ships)...even more than I did of ATL.

Hope all the servers are ready at the new URL's for the tsunami of hits that are going to come.

Guess there's no point in joining the other sub-Forums I hadn't checked yet, nor finishing my SIN CITY blurb in the 'entertainment' MOVIES section, nor getting back to MSK's posts, nor Bissell's prob with the the actual 'essence of O-ism', nor, well,...anything else. But then, I'm not much of an 'activist' (of whatever unclear type apparently desired,) merely a participant-member discussing ideas and thoughts...for my part, other than the jokes-'entertainment' forum, TOTALLY in terms of the basics of O'ism. On this I could argue that I thought that most 'articles' were in terms of O'ism's fundamental ideas, if not most being O'ist-oriented, but...I shan't; what point  now, hmmm? Anyhoo...

I must say that this has been the most Well-Organized site/forum (especially for categorizing sub-topics) that I've seen anywhere. Shame you all find it...irrelevent to your purposes. Ah, well...Thank you Lindsay, Joseph, Roger, et al, for it's existence.

      I don't know what else to say...dammit (sniff...cough).

...other than...

MTFBWY  always, and,
LLAP          always.

JD

Well, that's a funny way of putting it, John. Are you sure everyone's going to understand your abbreviations?

As for those SOLOC events... damn, I wish I could attend, now. I'm so accustomed to forums where everyone's pretty much impersonal--then I come here, and it's like all the major participants have met in person (many have)! Here I am, stuck in a Kansas State University dorm room with no car, little time, and at a loss for enough money to fund a trip to Florida... and it makes me mad! Grrrr... I would sure like to meet some of you.

Joe, was it really Michael Kelly's  "To turn or not to turn - a question of cheek" that broke the camels back?

I’m anxious to know the new Internet places that will be created. I’ll miss this place. I confess I didn’t contribute much to the core business of this site, activism. I’m not even sure I’m an Objectivist. All I know is reading Atlas Shrugged was intellectually liberating and helped change my life. The things I know about Objectivism came from online articles and forums like this one.

To me SoloHQ was like a club with restricted access; a place where I could leave the politically correct chatter behind and listen to intelligent conversation. Here I met people with a sense of life, people who actively and proudly pursued their values. Things where clear in SoloHQ, A = A, a cat’s a cat and a terrorist a terrorist. I had a feeling this was the place where excellence and achievement where celebrated in their own right, not as a means to please society or some mysterious god.

I hope there’s a new SoloHQ somewhere. I don’t want to choose a brand of Objectivism and shun all others. I couldn’t care less who criticised who and in what year or why Ayn Rand continued to smoke. I don’t feel at home at places where I need an Ayn Rand-lexicon by my side each time I want to reply to a post. I want to meet like-minded persons. Till now, this was possible on SoloHQ. Now you say it will be relocated and have a new management. I’ll check out the new place but remain sceptical.

GH,

I do not have that kind of power and Solo was not that fragile.

Thank you for that flattery, though. I am sorry you have such a low opinion of Solo that you think one article would do it in.

My opinion of Solo is much higher and I have always defended it - both it and its creators.

I still do.

Michael

Guido,
If you want to learn more, one of the more digestible sources are the articles in The Objectivist Newsletter and The Objectivist -- which are still available. (True, many of the articles wound up in later compilations. I still prefer the originals.)

Of course, many of the concrete examples are dated, but most of the articles were written such that they are still highly valuable lessons for an individual in today's society. And they are, so to speak, from the horses mouth.

Being individual articles they can be read in short spans of time, which can be digested in as much time as needed. And they're interesting from an historical perspective if you have an interest in that sort of thing.

One recommendation: Apart from judging how different individuals interpret and apply Objectivism, it's best to ignore nearly everything you read on Objectivist Internet fora -- including my posts (except this one :) -- until you have a much better understanding based on the original material.

[And I should add: Good luck! I envy you your exciting new journey. I still remember it well. Jeff Perren]

Mark,

If SOLO Florida is on and if you can afford to get to Lawrence KS, you can hitch a ride with me,  provided you chip in for the petrol. I'll be driving down.

But be warned I like to take the scenic routes - none of this I70 shit! You don't get to see any of the country that way!

I think it's obvious that one thing the matter with SoloHQ is there has just been too much Valliant/Rand/Branden going on with little sign of abatement. I contributed to that.

If you look at Joe's history, his last major post was "#93- Daily Linz 15- This cheek's not for turning." That's the end of October, a month later SoloHQ.com is to close and two new webs sites are ready to open in 4 days.

--"There are many problems with SoloHQ, some of them so large [MSK] that they cannot be ignored."
--"People write articles [MSK] that have next to no connection to Objectivism."
--"The best rewarded articles tend to be personal stories, often involving hardships and strong emotions, and with NO SUBSTANTIAL tie into Objectivism or even philosophy." [MSK]
--"People found it was easier to get sanctions by detailing every sordid detail of their lives." [MSK]
--"SOLO is seen as the particular crazy people [MSK] who happen to dominate the forums at any particular time."

Joe should be very proud of his creation. But "the organization is often confused with the participants on the forum." If Joe told someone about his activism, then sent them to his web site and they come across a MSK article ("I was bitch slapped as a child, I was bitch slapped by my mother-in-law, I was bitch slapped by my wife, but don't worry, like JOB there is a reason god is testing me") Joe loses creditability.

I'm also sure when ever he had to write a check for a Solo expense the "Fred Flintstone of Objectivism*" came to mind. Based on Linz's P.S., Joe must think that a "casual visitor might think the limps represent SOLO, let alone Objectivism." That saying, MSK's "article does not represent SOLO, and in my view is an affront to Objectivism as well" after the fact didn't work for him.

Guido -- I too wish Linz, Joe and Jeff well and wait with interest for Dec. 1, but for another place where you can read interesting material from an Objectivist perspective without having to know Rand personal trivia, check out www.objectivistcenter.org . You'll see major changes and even more material there soon. Also check out the New Individualist. We'll be turning out some more lively, interesting, redesigned issues starting in about a week. They'll eventually find there way to the website but you can subscribe as well and get all the cool photos and cartoons in addition to the articles.

There are those, like David Kelley, who demanded a debate on the Branden biographies fifteen years ago -- and who were simply "shocked" when it did not happen. Let me agree with Kelley: the issues raised by Ms. Branden's biography should be debated. I agree with him that it is regrettable that they were not. The pent-up demand, if you will -- the undiscussed issues, the built-up questions -- has caused a disproportionate attention to be focused on these issues lately, but should that really be surprising? (This discussion should have been spread out over the last twenty years.)

I think Brant asked earlier -- are these discussions going to be archived, erased, or restored once the new SOLO rises from the ashes? I didn't see that this was answered, and I gotta know whether I show go on a crazy DL spree tomorrow.
