For what it's worth (if anything), I would have a problem with a bisexual playing a straight guy who's playing a bisexual (in a play, or something like that) -- I just think it's too weird.

     Hmmmm....I guess that some DO remember Sharon. Convincing, wasn't she?

     I'll not raise the questions about 'method' acting or how 'deep' one needs to get into a role...or even if type-casting is relevent. Such would be a hi-jack here, methinks.

    However, given the general subject, how many had any prob re Rock Hudson in his pre-known-as-gay movies, especially after it was commonly established public knowledge (vs rumors)?

Can't say that I have, but I have to make a qualification regarding my earlier post. I wouldn't have a problem with a bisexual WOMAN playing a straight woman who's playing a bisexual woman (in a play, or something like that) -- that's not weird, it's kinky.

~ R. Chamberlain may have finished his career with his 'coming out' admission, but, as with Rock, I have no prob with appreciating him as a 'male' male, and Stanwyck (god, she was still a hottie even then!) in the mini-series of THE THORNBIRDS (not to mention RC in another TV-ms based on Clavell's SHOGUN!) --- I really don't see why some do (or have a 'perception'-prob therein); really.
~ Unless, of course, one confuses an actor/actress WITH their screen personas (which is really 'type-casting' by fans). --- Should such really matter in a presentation of 'pretending'? I don't think so.

~ You clarified, partly, what you would have a prob with, and clarified, partly, what you wouldn't have a prob with; the domain-of-discourse was not comprehensively exhausted as you must be well aware. 'Part' clarification just begs for questions, you see.

Did you all miss 20/20 last night? Turns out gay male actors have a terrible time getting parts as romantic leads. Producers and casting directors (many of whom are gay themselves) all agree with Sam!

This thread has brought to mind a favorite movie of mine, Victor/Victoria.

I personally don't care what an actor's actual sexuality is, only whether they are convincing in their role or not. Some are successful, some aren't, even when portraying a character whose sexuality they match.

Well, since we've specified some movies relevent to this subject of actors gender-bending roles, we'd be remiss to not mention THE BIRDCAGE with Nathan Lane and Robin Williams (based on the French LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.) Here's a straight male (Williams) playing a gay male who must pretend to be a straight male, and a gay male (Lane) acting as a gay male who must pretend to be a straight female; then there's Gene Hackman's 'conservative' character cross-dressing to avoid being recognized in an anti-conservative establishment.

It was hilarious, and, quite a 'gender-bender' idea.

Yeah, Birdcage is a great fun movie. Everyone is great in it.

As to the romantic lead roles, the requirement is "heart-throb". Gays just don't do it for women.

What, Hong, did you think of Brokeback Mountain? I haven't seen, nor do I intend to watch the movie. But I understand that most women find Ledger & Gyllenhaal to be "heartthrobs." By "gay" do you mean homosexual, (like Alexander the Great) or effeminate?

I truly dislike the term gay because it is a political term used by the left to package-deal three ideas, homosexuality, effiminacy, and left-wing politics. Just as it is assumed that "African-Americans" will naturally speak ebonics and the latest jive - and vote Democrat, it is assumed that a gay man is a fashion expert and votes Democrat. This is identity politics at its worst.
