*Sigh* ... Your esteemed editor hit the wrong button while attempting to reject this "article," and so what should have been placed as a news post has mistakenly been added to today's roster of articles. (In other news, I'm thinking of having one of those fat-fingered phones installed in my apartment.)

So, let's let this serve as an object lesson in submissions to the article queue. With the exception of rare cases decided upon beforehand by The Management, submissions must always be submitted by the author. No exceptions! If there's something over at mises.com or wherever that you'd like to see run as a SOLO article, either get the author to come here and submit it, or speak with Lindsay or me via email.

Now, Celeste is new and can be forgiven for not knowing any better, but if this stuff keeps showing up in the queue, more accidents are bound to happen!

Hey - those fat finger phones are great - you can even read the numbers without the glasses.

While we're on the subject of the queue ... it's getting rather sparse again! If any of you have been kicking around ideas for articles, now's the time to write them!

Celeste,

Michael Scheuer also wrote the book Imperial Hubris - have you read it? With permission by the CIA, Scheurer wrote the book anonymously while he was still with the agency (and later left the agency and gained the ability to go public with his name).

Scheuer was a lead case officer in charge of monitoring bin Laden during the 90's, and he knows his subject well.  He questions the whole notion of they-hate-us-for-what-we-are-not-what-we-do, and has many other startling observations, not all of them consistent.  Some chapters are quite tedious, but overall it's a compelling read.  It might round out what appears to be an otherwise hawkish reading list you seem to have on this issue.

Jody,

No, posts can be deleted but articles, once accepted, cannot. All the more reason to have your thoughts permanently preserved--in article form--for the edification of all SOLOists, for all time!

Andrew, they can be deleted.  And you have the power!  Use it!  Just click the magnifying glass!

Hmmm..maybe you don't have the power.  Do you?  Well, I deleted it anyway.

Um, not to disturb your rollicking good time at the expense of something serious... but did you actually have no plans to post this news story anywhere?

By the way, you boys are quite shamelessly sadistic when it comes to flaunting your power.  Or am I reading you wrong?

Pete,

Yes, I've heard of that book.  And I'm not sure if any other state of mind besides "hawkish" is conducive to our survival at this point.

Shamelessly sadistic flaunting of power?

LOLOLOLOLOL...

Michael,

You "raise" a good point, to which I will respond with two.

1) I saw that they had not posted a link to the article, or even, out of courtesy, re-posted the "article" -- as they so patronizingly put it in quotes -- as a news item, which they were apparently implying that it was.  And so immediately I vented my ire and then I hoped I could repost it as a news item, which it turned out that I could.

Why you would assume that my displeasure was insincere, is beyond me.  You don't seem to think anyone else but you is above the state of scum-hood.

And this brings me to my second point.

2)  I've only been in here a short while, and I've watched your gleefully cruel and superior attitude with just about everyone, except for those of like bent... and particularly those in power.

I don't understand why certain people talk so highly of you.  Your liabilities seem to me to outweigh your assets in any sober analysis.  It's probably fear that compels them to make such a display of praise towards you... either that, or a demented "awe" for your "power".

At either rate, just know that I pride myself on being a good judge of character and I'm not going to be interested in much of anything you have to say.

Celeste,

Dayaamm! LOLOLOL...

Lower your guns. I ain't fighting - just ribbing.

I can understand your initial ire, but how about a retraction when you find out that it was misguided? That it was just a technical problem? Does that not fit in with your psychological make-up? I really hope you are not another one who has to be right 100% of the time.

When I personally make an accusation against another, later discover that it was unfounded, I do not leave the accusation in place. That makes it sound like I still believe it - and I love truth very much. If you would take the time to read my last article, you will see that I have no bones about openly admitting my own shortcomings and examining them in public. The only way to get to the truth is to hold it up to a rational standard that transcends personalities, including my own.

Since you are new, you don't know me yet. I can give you a list of my own retractions in posts when I have been overly enthusiastic and made incorrect statements. I also can give you a list of my posts containing very strong ideas and exciting engagements with extremely high quality minds. Part of the respect you sense that I receive from others is that they have seen this love of truth in action.

I don't presume that you are insincere. To be frank, I only have read a couple of posts of yours and I like how you stand up for what you believe. I may disagree (I haven't read enough of your posts to even start getting a handle on your thoughts), but I do not judge you to be insincere. You are completely wrong about that. (I did read in the troll article that Adam called you a troll, but I haven't read enough of your own posts to make my own decision.)

I also get no glee out of engagements with assholes who try to misrepresent my arguments with smarm, name-dropping and other ploys and then start calling me names. (I presume you have witnessed a couple of recent exchanges.) To tell the truth, I get a wistful kind of sadness. I wish that focus would stay on the ideas. I have made it my policy, however, to demand respect from those who would interact with me. I will not continue an interaction with such an asshole, but I will make it extremely clear to all who read my posts that such asshole is nothing but an asshole - at least with respect to me. Usually in general, though.

As to a superior attitude, do I feel superior to something like the crap I just mentioned? Nah. Maybe. I don't know. I don't compare myself to it. I have a lot of living to do yet and something like that is a complete waste of time - a total misuse of the precious minutes and hours of life that never return.

btw - None of this, the smarm remark or the asshole part, includes you for the time being. The respect part most definitely does - and I will respect you to the extent you respect me. That's the way it works with me. Granted, I started out by ribbing you. But then, I rib everybody and there is no malice intended whatsoever when I do that. Sorry to ruffle your feathers. (Still, fourteen whole minutes of unbearable agony sitting behind a computer from sadists on another computer on the other side of the world is a funny image.) Anyway, who knows? Only time and your own posts - should you ever choose to post again to me - will tell.

About power, what on earth is all this about? I have seen several people consider this forum to be some kind of Machiavellian center where power plays run rampant. It is not. It is merely an extremely high-quality privately owned clearinghouse for Objecivist ideas with strong emphasis on enthusiasm and sincerity. Nobody I know of is paid to post here, so there is not even a jockeying for monetary gain. What power are you talking about?

My love of Linz and what he (and others) have accomplished? That has nothing to do with power and everything to do with rational evaluation taken to an emotional level. Loving the good for being the good.

As a personal choice, initially I am interested in seeing what is in that mind of yours. Only that. I'll read up on you. You look like you could be a very interesting person.

Michael

Cruel  and superior attitude?  I have to strongly disagree with that assessment.  Michael is by far the most wonderful person I have ever met in my life and  I just don't get how anyone could not be totally captivated by him.  I sure am. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

If that image is funny to you, then consider the image of me trying to live in a society held together by whole systems of sadism, for many years leading up to those "fourteen whole minutes of unbearable agony" that you still won't cease trying to push through as a false indictment of some lack of character on my part.

But thanks for declaring your tentative approval of my posts, for the time being.  I was wriggling with anticipation for some tidbit of your approval.
