I have even seen a couple of episodes.

Kat finds my lack of knowing these things a bit comical. That's what you get when you stay out of a culture for a few decades.

I still stumble with certain slang expressions, and other normal expressions like "My bad" sound plain weird to me, even now that I have learned them.

The first comment "Who's the model?" reminds me of a very funny novel I read years ago I can�t remember the name of the book but I think it was written by Bill Buckley�s son. Anyway the protagonist worked for the tobacco lobby and when hit with a Government ruling that all cigarette packages would have to bear a scull and crossbones warning label, used Mr. Rogers as the model for the scull

Robert,

Carlos Gomes (with an "s" at the end) was a Brazilian opera composer who sounds a little like Verdi. Same time frame also.

He wrote several operas that are still performed worldwide - and his overture to "O Guarani" (The Guarani Indian) is an informal national anthem in Brazil. I must have played that thing in public over 300 times (probably more).

Really nice romantic stuff, though. "O Schiavo" (The Slave) is really beautiful.

btw - There is another Carlos Gomes in Brazil - still living - who is a lowlife scumbag, but somehow I don't think your question is about him.
