Congrats on the new job, Joe. Go well.

Those new member and forum post figures are quite stunning, nearly 10% of the totals.

SOLO Psychology? Watch that one. You don't want to put an inmate in charge of the asylum :-)

Joe shouldn't be the only one plugging his article, "The All or Nothing Fallacy." This is the speech he gave at SOLOC, and it has finally appeared in print form. It concerns what is probably the most important philosophical issue *within* Objectivism and libertarianism. Joe handles it with typical Rowlandsian lucidity and does an excellent job.

If you're one of those anarchos who fantasizes equivalency between the U.S. and Saddam's Iraq because "they are both states" -- read this article immediately and call a Cambodian cemetery in the morning.

I second these thanks and congratulations, Joe. The numbers are a testament to your success. And let me know the name of that start-up ... I want in when it goes public!

Well done Joe et al.

I'd have never have thought it possible to increase the numbers after the drama of the last two months.  I agree with Andrew - see if you can make some money off this gig, you'd deserve every penny.

If I sent SOLO my picture, Joe, that'd be the end of SOLO!

It takes a while, I still remember when I was asking Joe about setting up solo Indiana and he said I needed a picture.  To which I responded something to the effect of "Wow did the one I submitted 5 days ago really suck that badly?"

Needless to say it got posted, and I realized that I really should've been having pictures taken at some points for reasons other than band promotion.

I am glad to see Solo so strong. I predict that it will continue to grow. It is a magnificent achievement.

I agree about Joe's article in the Free Radical, All or Nothing: Philosophy with Degrees.

Joe, this is one of the finest articles I have read of yours. It is extremely important to understand the difference between degrees and pragmatism, which is where I think most people take a discussion of boundaries and degrees. The emotional charge Ayn Rand put on certain catchwords like "black and while," "absolutes" and similar others, and the vehemence with which she denounced pragmatism and logical positivism and other relativist philosophical movements has led many people to apply the "all or nothing" standard to concept formation, ethical concepts (like honesty) and a host of other issues. Your part on concept formation was an excellent nutshell description of the Objectivist theory.

Will this article ever appear on Solo?

Michael

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.  It looks like it will be a fun job, and hopefully a very lucrative one.

And thanks Alec and Michael for the plug of my article/speech.  The feedback I've gotten on it has been very positive so far.  I don't know if or when it will go up on SOLO.  Lindsay decides which FreeRad pieces end up on SOLO, so that there's always a big benefit to subscribing.

Pictures take some manual effort to put up, and this is all volunteer time, so be patient.

Thanks Joe. I hope my joking about the picture not being posted came across as just that; a joke. I understand and appreciate the volunteer effort that goes on here.

YAY! I'm one of these "new members". I would send in a picture of me, but I haven't taken a serious picture since my senior pictures 2 years ago. All of my pictures now are the likes of http://www.public.iastate.edu/~brandonm/FootInMouth2.jpg and http://www.public.iastate.edu/~brandonm/Chainsaw2.JPG . :)

I'm glad to be here!

That chainsaw picture is obviously a fake. It needs blood on the chain, and then possibly a squirted splash of blood and chunks thrown across your shoulder like a post-modern painting. Now really, that's pretty funny. You should be more careful with chainsaws.

I think the foot-in-mouth would be an excellent picture to use for the SOLO forum. haha : )
