I ran across a statement elsewhere on the Web a while back that I think represents a much better approach -- much less pressure without loss of benefit:
"The purpose of dating is to leave each other better than when you found each other."
I happened to think of this when I celebrated my 20th elopement anniversary earlier this week.
As an aside, two words for a successful long-term relationship: "Listen intensely."
