Absalom! Absalom! was painful. Faulkner seems to be just showing off his fancy vocab and his desire to use only one period on a page.

I will give Dickens a shot, though.

I certainly have no disagreement about Dickens - especially in light of the facts that he wrote several such well-wrought works, and that these - many at least - were serialized, that is, he was still writing out the latter parts of the tales while the first parts were being printed!

But as for Faulkner - No.  Hardly.

Jeff-
We gotta stop meeting like this.  Another sanction.  Thanks for a well written and in-depth explanation.

Jeff,

The art of storytelling may be broken down into a number of more specialized skills, e.g., plotting, characterization, mixing "scenic" narration with "panoramic" narration, management of point of view, management of time, creation of "suspense," etc., etc., etc.

The art of writing (in the specific context of writing novels) may be similarly broken down into a number of more specialized skills, e.g., descriptive writing (static), descriptive writing (active), dialogue writing, management of rhythm, management of imagery, management of place and character names, management of parallel structures, etc., etc., etc.

Isn't much of this in the eye of the beholder?

As to Dickens specifically, I concur that you have picked the best of the lot.  But many of Dickens novels are repetitive not only in tone and plot, but even in the choice of individual words and phrases sometimes within the same novel.  Many are overly sentimental, preoccupied with class warfare or the evils of industrialization and too many plots resolve themselves by the simplest of all devices: Deus Ex Machina. I prefer George Elliot on these themes.

Robert, Jeff is no longer on SOLO having been banned. The above post was his last here. I have to say he asked for it. If you want to correspond with him you'll find him and his email address on AtlantisII, Yahoo Groups.

Scott,
I'm not sure one can properly regard Danielle Steele as an English language novelist, since that would imply she was a) a novelist, b) wrote in English.

Jeff R was banned or was he emphatically moderated?

Joe specifically warned him. I can only guess he sent Joe or Linz some kind of unacceptable message subsequently.

Banned. Joe told me so without going into any detail. After Joe told him to cool it he must have sent in a red hot poker. Knowing JR this was inevitable. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. He posts in the same style elsewhere; he did tone it down for a while, but that's like putting a cork in a volcano.

About Jeff R. Yes, I warned him and told him to stop with the constant insults. He "posted" saying we should just ban him because he can't be civil. So we did.

One thing I can't understand is this:  Jeff seemed to imply that he associates with Chris Sciaberra.  I can't for the life of me comprehend why someone such as Chris would associate with this jack-ass.

Jody, calling somebody a "jack-ass," even if he is no longer here, is indicative of precisely the problem that caused JR to be banned. It's not civil. I've done this sort of thing myself, once or twice--e.g., I called Leonard Peikoff a "twirp." I make no excuses. I just try to exercise greater control. Of course, he's still a "twirp."

Given his histrionics and use of vitriol in lieu of saying anything intelligent, I was not trying to be civil.  I have no remorse.  Civility is always a good starting point, but there comes a point where continuing to use it is just being 'limp'.

From the Oxford Dictionary of Current English;

jackass(n): A foolish or stupid person; a blockhead

I am being objective.  Was he not foolish in his dealings with other here?  Especially the proprietors?
