This may have been discussed elsewhere and I missed it, but what's going on with the site today?  It's been crawling all day today for me, and I've tried it on two different computers.  It took me almost 3 minutes just to get to this point.

Cpu(s): 39.2% user, 50.5% system, 7.1% nice, 3.1% idle,

Your right. The CPU is overloaded. I checked to see if my new mail system is causing it... but it doesn't look like it. There are few processes running on the CPU owned by us, and they are of low CPU%. I think "system" means a root process, so maybe the system admin is running some kind of backup or something.

Yea, its not us... some other punk is using all of the CPU time. Too bad we use a non-dedicated server.

Dean,

How much extra would it cost to run SOLO on a dedicated CPU?

Dedicated hosting is much more expensive than non-dedicated hosting. If the site went to dedicated hosting, Joe might have to start implementing user fees.

Luke, what type of things would you suggest a fee be placed on?

Disclaimer: Not that I see solohq charging user fees any time soon, but just exploring the idea. Not that I have any say in it, just exploring the idea. I don't make these sorts of decisions for solohq.

Well, message boards like those at http://www.mybeachbody.com charge a flat fee of $9.00 per month to post and to read messages, to track exercise regimens, etc.  Basically, anyone who wants to play in the club has to pay the cover charge -- and misbehavers get bounced and terminated without prorated refunds as far as I can tell.

What I would suggest if I had any say here about the matter would be to estimate the total costs for a dedicated server divided by the number of people estimated to be willing to pay a monthly fee of $10 or less.  There would have to be some sort of "maximum value" cost assigned with growth expectations built into the equation.

For the sake of Google searches, the archives could all remain public, but posters would have to be willing to pay a fee of some sort, with perhaps a cost break or other perks for those willing to fill staff positions.  I suggest perks rather than cost breaks -- not sure what the perks would be, though.

I would be willing to pay up to $ 20. per month for the privilege of active participation in SOLO. I would prefer to see fees only for active participants; SOLO should remain readable without payment. No fee for discussion group leaders and others who do significant work on the site, perhaps also a remission in fees for contributors of significant articles, at the discretion of Joe and Linz. I would expect a rise in the quality of discussion, and higher quality will encourage more good people to join and pay, etc. Perhaps the fees should be imposed and increased gradually for this to take place. And I hope that there will be a terms-of-use contract, so that missionary trolls will not be able to just buy access to SOLO by paying a users' fee.

What do the Heroes-in-Charge think?

Yes, the usual "I have read and understand the terms of use agreement" box check needs to be a part of the registration process.  Many chat sites and most software downloads include this caveat.

I just got done viewing a speech on developing an internet community by Richard Kyanka of www.somethingawful.com, a humor website that pokes fun at the internet's vast seemy underbelly. He originally imposed the small user fee for their forums because there was some troll they were unable to stop from registering new accounts and posting crap, so he reasoned that the guy wouldn't be willing to pay money to do that. SomethingAwful now has what is largely considered one of the highest quality communities on the internet.

I suppose my only concern would be that we have some people who only post every few weeks or so, but make excellent contributions when they do. I'd be sorry to see that go. But, it's worth looking into.

It would be interesting to charge per post, on an exponentially decreasing charge per post, which resets once per month or so.

I like the idea of everyone paying-- even staff.

And of course, hopefully the money will be spent wisely, so that people will see results from their payment.

How about pay a dollar per post and get five cents back for each sanction point?

Let's say we balance the books monthly. Say a typical solo active member posts once a day and say gets an average of one sanction for every other post. So, 30 times $1 minus 15 times $.05, he owes $29.75. Yikes, he says, too much! He modifies his behavior. The next month he posts only 10 times, puts more thought into each post and gets an average of two sanctions per post. $10 minus 20 times $.05, he only owes $9.00. Someone like Tibor Machen , who posts perhaps 10-15 times a month, but very likely averages many more than 20 sanctions per post would never owe anything, but actually get paid. [MM: hooray!].

Another thought, perhaps the people doing the sanctioning pay the nickle? That way solo isn't losing money for sanctioned articles but making more money for posting good articles. Sort of like real publishing.

Landon,

That's what accountants are for. And programmers.
