I had the pleasure of meeting and having dinner with Andrew as he swung through Chicago--what a great guy! If only I had a bit more notice, I might have been able to clear my schedule to enterain him more than the scant hours we were able to share with Kat! Still, it never ceases to amaze me how naturally the conversation and humor flows whenever I meet a SOLO-ist face to face. Andrew and Kat were a treat, and I was really bummed that he was only in Chicago for a day, and that my schdule forbade me from showing him more of what the City had to offer! Still, it was a blast. This guy is a cat I need to spend a solid night drinking with. Probably several.

Any word as to how he has spent the last several days (I can last account for him at about 12:30 am on Sunday). Is he on target to make his flight?

Scott, as you know I took over the chaperoning responsibilities for Andrew late Saturday night.  After dropping off his stuff at my place, we hit the town.   I proudly assumed wingman duties, and we ventured off first to a few watering holes in the Ukranian Village (Black Beetle and Tuman's).  Not much happening there, so we went to Grand Central near Lincoln and Sheffield.  Talked to a few girlies here and there and before you know it, it's last call.  So, being the wee hours of the night/morning and given our location, we wandered over to *Deja Vu, but we didn't last too long there as both of us were very exhausted (I personally was running off 2 hours sleep from the night before and had just spent a day on the water).  We hailed a cab and retired for the evening.  I had an early tee time the next morning so I unfortunately had to kick young Andrew out at about 8am.  He said he was going to try to make it to Denver in one swoop, and that was the last I saw of him.

I too enjoyed his company.  He certainly isn't shy around the ladies, and he knows how to work his accent.  Perhaps one day he can be my wingman if I ever make it to NZ.

I would have liked to have hung out with you and Kat too, but I unfortunately had other plans that were made prior to knowing what was going on.  Maybe another time.

* not to be confused with national strip club chain of the same name - it's a local bar in Chicago known for being open late and a catalyst for debuachery...

I also had a great time with Andrew and Scott.  Best fun I've had since coming back from Florida.  Sorry, I didn't get to meet you Pete.
Ladies, these guys are super great guys and really hot...so hot that they made the cheese catch on fire.  Their pics don't do them justice at all.  Oh, and Andrew is very charming, funny, has a very sexy accent and is single.  So is Scott...but he is spoken for.      ;-)

The title of this thread is amusing and is what drew me to look at it. Facts about Andrew Bates and his drinking are legendary and at first hearing sound like fiction. However the ones contained in this thread are rather tame.

Andrew is fucking legend! I, too, was very sad that he could only stay the night. I'm sure he is a big hit with the ladies, although he spent the night here with Meg and me and all we played was darts. Hm.

I just spent an evening -- until three in the morning -- with Andrew, Alec, and James K. I will vouch for the fact that Andrew definitely is fiction. I also will vouch for the fact that we all had a great time, that Andrew mostly spoke slowly enough that I could understand him past his accent, that he is a large package of good will and good cheer -- and that he is, to boot, a highly intelligent and sensitive man.

Where is Andrew, by the way? He must've gotten lost at the international date-line -- he certainly vanished from existence for a whole day, but that was yesterday, and he doesn't seem to have returned.

Although he might be hiding behind cloaks and shadows, and under a red cap. We caught the special Rembrandt exhibit at the Getty right before he shipped off to New Zealand.

"Where is Andrew, by the way?"

He slept on my couch here in Auckland last night. I'd forgotten how much he snored. Before he fell asleep mid-sentence he had only warmly enthusiastic things to say about every American he ever met, especially all the SOLOists. :-)

I'm relieved he made it back into NZ. After all the mayhem he caused in America I thought he might have been turned away as a terrorist. :-)

What's he doing back in NZ? I thought M. Bates was going to grace us with his presence here in the UK, or should we expect him soon?

I'm really glad Andrew got home safely.  I was afraid that he had hooked up with a guy I thought was a male prostitute who had approached the van after he dropped me off.    ;-)

John, I wish I knew you were coming up.  It would have been great if you were able to join us.  We went to a wonderful restaurant in Greektown and it was a great time.  We will meet up sometime when I settle in Florida.

I can't wait to see Andrew's next article about his trip. Through his journey across America, I think Andrew Bates has made our online community become a lot more connected.  For that I thank him.

Chicago was wonderful. The women Scott and I saw were gorgeous (there, there - easy now Colonel). The view from the Sears Tower was incredible and the architecture was stunning. The meal at the Greek restaurant was a visual and taste sensation - and how about that Greek beer??!!

While Pete will agree that Holly was a hotty and her friend Kim was not too bad either, it's not such a shame the girls didn't come with us to Deja Vu as the girls there were hot, raunchy and packed against us like fish in a can. OK, poor taste analogy. It was a pity that a lack of sleep from driving until 4am the night before and the previous three nights out in Boston and Portsmouth, New Hampshire had taken a toll on me and we couldn't stick around. Who knows what I said as I fell asleep, mid sentence, while answering Pete's question as to whether there were any other straight SOLOists in NZ. But in America, who knew what I was saying half the time anyway?!

I made the 1,000 mile drive to Denver the next day, doing 85 mph from 8:30am Sunday, Central Time to 12:30am Monday, Mountain Time. Did you know they make 89 Octane ethanol gas from corn in Iowa? It's cheaper than the normal 87 Octane petrol. I thought Iowa's state motto should be "We do amazing things with corn." That was until I saw the phrase on the billboard for an adult entertainment truckers' stop.

The next day was cloudless and I drove along the I-70 through the Rockies, not getting under way until after noon as I slept through most of Monday morning. The view was all green and blue with the exception of the inside of Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel at 11,000 feet and my heart was singing as I roared through the canyons. I went through the Grand Junction and on to Utah where I went off the I-70 to scenic Moab before returning, driving past the junction with the I-15 at dusk (which is beautiful in the desert) and spending the night in Beaver. Yes, Beaver, the town. The next day I drove down to Vegas (I got off the I-15 to go to the Grand Canyon but it was going to be too far out of my way) where I detoured to the Hoover Dam and spent some time swimming and sunbathing at Lake Mead before driving on to LA.

Alec dropped me at James Kilbourne's the next morning where I enjoyed two hearty meals and a feast of Lanza and Opera singing - joining James in singing the English translation of Fenunculi Fenuncula. We were later joined by Alec and Barbara (and by Sergio briefly) and the conversation and alcohol flowed into the wee small hours of the next day, which Alec and (according to her email) Barbara slept through most of. Late in the afternoon Alec and I enjoyed Baja Fresh burritos and the Getty (the architecture of which and view from which were amazing and I got to see William Bouguereau's 1880 painting,Young Girl Defending Herself Against Cupid (http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/image.asp?id=1058 - definitely a highlight).

After returning to Alec's I did some washing, packed my stuff, signed over the van to Alec's mum and took off (late) to catch my flight (which also took off late). As Alec noted, I missed Friday July 22nd and arrived Saturday at 5am. I had two hours sleep when I got home then caught up with family and went partying with flatmates, after a jetlag-induced two hour sleep from 8:30pm in my old flat and with the help of two coffees and two vodka red bulls. We returned from the party at 2am but I was awake three hours later as my biological clock had not reverted from LA time. Hence the snoring at Cresswell's.

The time I spent at Ashley's was great fun but tamer than most would expect. I wish I could have spent more time with Ash and Meg and with the Chicago crew but the 90 days just flew by. Next stop is Dunedin to catch up with family, then after running three Libertarianz candidates' campaigns I will take off to Sydney to work for a year and then move on to London. If I could work out an easy way to move to the US I would be back in a flash.

Thanks to Andrew's visit, I had my second hangover of the year- the first being when Linz visited. You guys are definitely rough on the brain cells.

Andrew, you are always welcome at my house. I told you that you were Sergio's type, and he said that he really liked you the next morning. I said "AHA!", but before I could accuse him of anything, he said, "He has a great soul and a big heart."
Nice recovery, Sergio. And, of course, I agree.

Yes, I assumed so - otherwise the rest of the world would be doing it. I also noticed a "Clean Burning Ethanol" sticker above the pump which suggested the eco-fascists in government had something to do with it.

James K - did Sergio also say I was too young, as you suggested he would?

The only palce you might be able to do 85mph legally in the US is Montana. Andrew Bates is a US lawbreaker! (I wonder how fast he goes in NZ?)
