Shayne, to answer your question, yes, I have received an approving nod from Executive Director Joe Rowlands. He even mentioned this approach favorably in a recent Staff Announcement.

In any case, as you may have noticed, I have managed to talk a number of former Meetup Members into moving to SOLO Local Clubs since Meetup started charging $19 per month per group. We will discuss how best to employ Meetup's price hikes to SOLO's long term advantage at SOLOC 4.

Maybe I misunderstand, but given the thread there, I thought "hijacking" was an apt word for what you were doing. And then you bailed out for some reason. What reason? If the place wasn't yours, why'd you mark it "SOLO"? If it was yours, why'd you leave?

Oh, that's easy. Just walk on the path of property rights using my self interest.

Meetup arranged its system with a specific set of rules designed to codify via software how they wanted things done. No one can violate their property rights without their permission unless they deliberately hack past their firewalls.

I did not do that.

When Meetup was free, I had an incentive to spread the word about SOLO by stepping up to the plate to organize each Ayn Rand Meetup not already claimed, renaming it as a SOLO Local Club, adding some blurbs about SOLO to the descriptions and welcome messages, then leaving. Meetup only allowed a person to serve as Organizer for up to 25 groups, so I grabbed all the ones in Florida (where I live) and most of the ones in California (where SOLOC 4 will occur) and only made brief stops at the other unclaimed ones.

Meetup just announced that it will charge $19 per month per group beginning in May. With the ground already prepared from my past activism, I can now spread the word that Ayn Rand Meetup Members can move to SOLO at no cost to enjoy the same basic Ayn Rand Meetup benefits.

Whether you find my methods justifiable to your satisfaction ultimately does not matter to me, so I will not spend time arguing with you over it. I have already satisfied myself of their rightness and neither the owners of Meetup nor those of SOLO have moved to stop me. In the end, their opinions count most and all others count far less.

Good Lord, Luke, I had no idea! SOLO's aim has been world domination by 2008.
Thanks to you it looks as though we've already achieved it.

I haven't bothered informing myself about this meetup thing - I've left it to you & Joe. That's why one has Executive Directors & club coordinators. I know Joe wouldn't sanction anything underhand, & you, being the good Mormon you are, wouldn't either. Clearly you've gotten up some folks' noses, though. I trust your judgement as to how or whether you need to deal with that.

It may help to stress that SOLO is not an exclusive sect like ARI that bans or even discourages members from participating in other Objectvivist groups.ARIans & TOCians are welcome on SOLO, as are the unaffiliated & the homeless. And SOLOists regularly trash their leaders ... well, they often trash their founder, anyway! It's a very cosmopolitan group, & too much should not be read into an association with it, except rationality in passionate clothing.

posts of some lunatics whose brain chemistry has led them
to confuse Objectivism with ... ahem ...

Shayne, that certainly wasn't a jab from Michael. He is genuinely happy for you and your new found etiquette thing and so am I. Rock on.

We are in agreement that Luke sometimes crosses the line with some of his stuff like dump Meet-up and join Solo. My approach with Solo Illinois is to encourage members of all objectivist groups, campus clubs, Meet-up, New Intellectual Forum, etc. to get involved with Solo in order to enhance and expand upon, rather than replace what they already are involved in as objectivists. I think Linz stated it very well...

When I read what Luke was doing, I was wondering whether I had mistakenly joined up to some kind of cult by posting to Solo. I don't sanction proselytizing about conversion to Solo. Indeed, I never thought, and I hope I'm right about this, that that's not even something one can do. Leave that sort of thing to the Mormons.

Shayne, if people want to pay through the nose to use Meetup, that is their business. I use the term "convert" in the same sense as I mechanically "convert" metric to English units. I think SOLO offers many opportunities for values not available elsewhere.

                           The basic theme of my writing is the following -
Ayn Rand wrote in Atlas Shrugged that John Galt is Prometheus.The man of the highest
mind would obviously demonstreate the highest capacity in any work that he chooses to do
in his lifetime.So Prometheus is the real life Roark and Galt.But it is not true that Prometheus
was torn everytime he was born in the last ten thousand years of mankind's existence.Some
legends from outside Europe easily show who were the rebirths of the highest man.

         No man born in Europe during the last ten thousand years qualifies to be the rebirth of
Prometheus.It was as if the soul of the highest man existed in the Atlas Shrugged state,
refusing to Europe again after what was done to him in Greece.Men as completely evolved as we are appeared for the first time during the period of 10000 BC TO 8000 BC.But until
about 3000 BC everything is a complete blank to us!Only myths and legends tell us what happened there.

         Ayn Rand had no way of knowing who were the rebirths of Prometheus!

       10000 BC to 8000 BC   -   Appearance of first modern man.

   Prometheus        -    8000 BC                        -  Greece

   Ram                   -    8000 BC                        -  India

   Krishna              -     3000 BC                       -   India

   Aristotle             -     384-322 BC                  - Greece

   Ayn Rand           -    1905-1982 AD               - Russia,America

Promehteus,Ram and Krishna are one and the same individual.They are the first three births
of the man of the highest mind.Ram was the immediate rebirth of Prometheus.

The work started by Aristotle in philosophy was completed by Ayn Rand.Ayn Rand was the
first philosopher to have reached the complete answer to the question what is life.It is stated
in her work of Atlas Shrugged.

Howard and John Galt [Ayn Rand's fiction heroes] lead a passionate and violent life in order to achieve their identities.The same can be observed in the stories of Prometheus,
Ram and Krishna.

If one sees what Krishna did five thousand years ago,it makes the entire last five
thousand years look silly and shows that only Ayn Rand is Right and everybody
else is Wrong!
