Thanks.  I'll get right onto it just as soon as I have some free time. :)

You want "total passion for the total height"?

Find the Rachmaninoff 3rd recording by Alexis Weissenberg, backed by George Pretre and the Chicago Symphony. They squeeze every last drop of passion out of Rachmaninoff's greatest concerto. It leaves you in another universe. My all-time favorite recording of anything.

Michael K: "For what it's worth, Barbara, if I did offend you, I do apologize."

Good heavens, no!

Chris, I completely agree with you about Ray Charles' "America the Beautiful." I first heard him sing it at Reagan's second inaguaration, and I wept all the way through it -- then saw Reagan with tears running down his cheeks.

Another volley into the fray...

A progressive rock band from the 90s, Echolyn, has many Ayn Rand themes in their music. Maybe you should give them a try? They're not as melodic as Yes, but I really like them. In particular, this album: http://cdbaby.com/cd/echolyn6 - here is a partial track list from CD 1:
  1. Fountainhead: a. Dominique b. Howard Roark c. The Banner
  2. The Great Men
  3. On Any Given Night
  4. Carpe Diem

This topic of this article came up again a few years ago, elsewhere. It prompted me to write an in-depth rebuttal of the original piece at my blog, covering topics I didn't go into in the discussion here, but in hindsight, I wish I had. I thought I'd post it here as well, for archival purposes. It's lengthy, so I'm simply going to post the link:

Objectivish: "No? YES!"
