I have to say I'm very concerned about the invasion of Appellachian inbreds, as evidenced by the recent eulogies to ... to ... to ... Country "music"!!!!! I should warn that a mass purge is imminent. More in sorrow than anger, of course. Kinda like the inbred dad who said to his inbred son, who'd just blown up the outside loo with misplaced firecrackers: "Son, ya shouldn'ta done that. Your mom was in there."

Oh, Lindsay, you'll have to throw me bodily from the place!  I'm not goin' anywhere.  And you'll find at SOLOC4 that I'm not a hick nor a hillbilly nor inbred - my mother-sister-cousin-grandfather notwithstanding (whom I simply call "Dad" for brevity).

Hi Philip,

"I 've noticed that SOLO has a very nice, friendly, and supportive group of people. (Which is the reason I've stayed..."

I was recently made aware that "friendly and supportive" is being sneered at as "group hugs" in other places. I posted a quote from Barbara ("Fortunately, Solo is not respectable") earlier, but screwed up the thread having a chance to take off by posting it twice by mistake. So a post by me on this got buried over there. As I have a callous where my sense of shame should be, I will repeat it here:

I was just sent an e-mail suggesting that I look at another site (which I prefer not to grace by mentioning - no free advertising in this post). This site claims to be much more respectable in maintaining the true spirit of Objectivism. What I read, though, was mostly bitching about SOLO and name-calling type bickering between the posters.

What amused me greatly was that I saw some of MY posts from SOLO repeated and sneered at as prompting group hugs and the like. They also don't like being thrown off SOLO. They especially don't like fags (but they seem to like circle jerks).

Well talk about mind-body dichotomy! I guess it is OK for them to talk about joy but not OK to show it.

Fuck 'em.

I am not gay (I like kittens), but I will proudly stand with the gay members on this forum and basically say to the Objectivist world:

WE'RE HERE. WE'RE QUEER. GET USED TO IT.

(That unfortunately came from Madonna, but I really like the line.)

It sure feels good to know that I am bothering some people out there from in here - in my own Galt's Gulch - with "group hugs" from those I respect and admire and everything else they envy.

That is the spirit I associate with Barbara's tongue-in-cheek comment.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Kelly, but this at least is in the ball park of your article.

Michael

Hi Michael,

I think I can live with being disreputable and non-respectable. Please don't let the word get around in Objectivist circles but I've also been known to dance during philosophy lectures and wear white shoes after Labor Day.

Philip, I can cope with you being disreputable; I can cope with you being non-respectable; I even can cope with you dancing during philosophy lectures. But white shoes after Labor Day? It smacks of Ellsworth Toohey. Oh evil one, some betrayals of Objectivist principles cannot be forgiven.

I hereby excommunicate you.

But, Barbara: They were sneakers and it was during gym class and I was only twelve. Plus I had been drinking. Doesn't context matter for -anything-?

Philip, now you're making excuses on the premise of victimhood. Begone!

What do you think you're doing?...

ahem... er...

I mean... uh... er... well...

this morally corrupt cleansing thing... ahm...

I know, I know... white shoes and all... but... uh...

are you... well... you know...

trying to make SOLO respectable or something?

I forgot to mention as a further mitigating circumstance that my pet rodent had died (because I had killed it).

So I was distraught and out of focus.

Am I re-instated yet?

Philip, just saw your last post.  I have no authority in the matter since Barbara did the excommunication, but my recommendation is "No."

The white shoe thing already got your name on the watch list with the Velvet Mafia.  The Dolly comment on Tibor's article thread has now gotten you on the watch list of the Southern arm, the Velvet Elvis Mafia.  Watch your back, man.  They are.

Jason, wrt Mafia hit squads, it's not just Barbara and you and Dolly it's Robert whom I've dared to impugn.

Bidinotto -is- an Italian name.

And vendetta, consigliore, stiletto(and sleeps-with-the-fishes)are all Italian phrases. Further, my understanding is that 'prosciutto' means 'payback to those who disagree with my philosophical ideas' in Sicilian.

Yo, Bobster-Dude, if you and Jason and BB -all- start ganging up on me, I'm going to feel more paranoid than usual.

(Although calling you Bobster-Dude is probably not helping.)

I am grateful to the contributors to RoR (and should probably say so at least once a year, particularly at Thanksgiving time).**

**Talk of any moral obligation is off-putting to some. My felt obligation to show gratefulness, may seem un-chosen and otherworldly to some -- but that is not the case. If you order your values into a rational hierarchy, then consequences will follow. Some consequences will be realizations of things that are important to you, of which you were not personally aware.

An alternate view is to hold that being rational means to personally promulgate every felt desire (including felt obligations). But it would be rationalistic to fall into that trap.
