Here's an eminem song... now when you read it get over your preference for white anglo queen's english. Here is a song by a man who struggled - worked hard - succeeded when odds were against him.

It's a call to the listener to embrace life - grab life with both hands - not settle for second best.

I find this song inpiring - not "life destroying" or "anti life". I struggle with my writing. To have a song which is inspitational, talked about how hard work will bring success is just what I need... not some classical music worshipping nature....

Yeah - I found my inspiration in Gansta Rap (I find Dr Dre a great inspiration too) not in Beetoven. Hey I guess I must be a life hating lowlife slime filled scum.....

I'm going to get shot for this, but I happen to love that Eminem song, as I do several of his others.  Though much of his music is malevolent, songs like this have an underlying theme of persistence, tenacity and "crawling over dead bodies" (a la Howard Roark) to get to the goal.  I have to respect that.

I used to have this song primed for the toughest part of my gym workout, because it gave me an adrenaline rush to get me through the peak of the physical challenge.  Classical just wouldn't have gotten the job done.

Please be careful what music you recommend to James. I have more than a suspicion that I'll have to listen to it, too.

To give you my history concerning popular music: A number of years ago, a young friend asked me if I liked the Beatles. No! I answered at once. Then my friend named a particular song, and asked if I liked it. It's beautiful, I answered. He named several other popular songs, which I also very much liked. They're all Beatles songs, he told me. Where am I now? I like quite a lot of Beatles music. And that's about where I stopped. So please, be gentle.

Barbara, James,

In a number of recent threads, I and a few other members have recommended various contemporary musicians. I personally have quite a fondness for certain progressive rock groups, such as the Rand influenced Rush, and Symphony X. If either of you were to listen to some of this music, it's entirely possible that you will decide it simply doesn't "do it" for you, and that would be fair enough. You don't even have to buy any albums - Amazon.com has free online samples of these and many other records.

Just a thought :-)

I have to agree that "Living On A Prayer" is a masterpiece of modern rock. Or wait, if I call it a masterpiece does that imply that I think it's art...? In any case, I like Eminem, as well. I'm with Jennifer - it's what I use at the gym. Um, when I went to the gym, before I broke my leg. Really, though, the lyrics don't have to be inspirational for me to be entertained, I mean, I don't demand that of opera - christ, how do I know what they're saying in italian/german/whatever? so why do I need to try and decipher rap? As long as I can shake my booty or is has an impressively catchy rythm, good enough.

Props to "Living on a Prayer" (that Slippery When Wet album is great), the Beatles, Rush, and to a lot of other great tracks and bands mentioned here.  And don't forget that even though I love Mario Lanza, I can appreciate some of Eminem too.  I also have a great love for classical, film scores, jazz, R&B, and, dare I say:  disco.  Yes, CLASSIC disco---to which I danced my ass off in the late 70s and early 80s (when I was a mobile DJ working bar mitzvahs, proms, and school dances...).

I'd run for the hills from Linz's wrath, but don't let him fool you. Not when he's quoting from Elton John and the Spice Girls, and swiveling his hips on the Coney Island boardwalk to the sounds of the Bee Gees

Okay, now I'll run.  heh
