In the Washington Post, one person responded with a great reply:

A Faith-Based Initiative For the Republicans
Sunday, April 30, 2006; Page B06

In his April 27 op-ed column, "Romney's Religious Test," Robert D. Novak discusses Republicans who think that no rational person could believe in the Book of Mormon. Have these Republicans ever read the Bible?

If they are going to apply a religious rationality test to their presidential candidates, they had better start looking for a nonbeliever.

I agree that Christians that 'poo-poo' Mormonism are not being consistent with the view that Faith is a means of gaining knowledge.  However, the problems that most in the GOP have with Romney is that he's a Liberal (except by Massechusetts standards).

Novak loves to bash the GOP.  He was at CNN too long.

This quote reminds me of Chick Tracts (http://www.chick.com) and the "Awake" newsletters Jehovah's wittnesses leave everywhere.

Both publications are quite adept at eviscerating other religions and their foolish mysticism... yet they turn a blind eye to their own.

I concur with all the previous comments. As a former Mormon, I'm reminded of a statement I would use on all my traditional Christian friends, "if you can believe all that stuff in the Bible, what's a few more unbelievable stories?

Bingo, and coming from the same state which continues to put Teddy Kennedy back in office means he starts out with two strikes against him with many Christian conservatives.

Yes, there is a contradiction here - of course - but Mormons do seem to be quite a bit stranger. Many Christians believe that Old-Testament stories are figurative, but Mormons take the Book of Mormon as fact. They believe that Native Americans are Jews turned brown, women get secret names, couples continue to 'breed' in heaven to create spirit babies, the Book of Mormon was translated from "Egyptian" using special spectacles from heaven and magic "peep stones", etc. Maybe it is so strange because the strangeness of common Christians is just so familiar. Yet, Mormons still flabbergast me especially since so many seem to be very intelligent, nice, and successful people.

Seeing that most Mormons are Republican, I don't think they would be astonished :)

South Park did a great episode on Mormanism. They took a route most people wouldn't have taken. They just disembowel how foolish most of the fundamental ideas are but they point out that mormans tend to be good decent people.
