The wide divergence of opinion reflects the fact that those responding were not privy to all of the evidence in the same way the jury was when they voted to acquit three of the four officers involved.

Bill,

What surprises me is that 44% of the votes (at the time I posting this) don't think it warranted criminal investigation - worse, they didn't even think it rose to the level of considering termination - I can't believe those people looked at the video.

That there was a man sent to the hospital after use of force by the police requires ipso facto a departmental investigation. Even if their actions were commendable, which you couldn't say without an investigation, an investigation was necessary. It is just such an investigation that would ascertain the facts that Bill points out we need. The need for a criminal investigation, which I happen to think the video evidence warranted, is a separate matter.

To declare before the fact that no investigation whatsoever was warranted is to say that the police need not justify their actions.

There is only one wrong answer to this poll. It is not that the cops were to be commended. That could indeed be argued. It is to deny that an investigation was necessary. The subordination of force to lawful civilian control is the essence of a government of law. If the police are free to use potentially lethal force without having to justify their actions then as supporters of a government of limited powers we might as well all just pack up and go home, and hope that it is our own gang and our strongman who wins the next "election."

Rodney getting stonewalled, hmmm. Perhaps the police behavior reflects on them as much as the citizens arrogance excaberates the situation. Police have the responsibility to use a sufficient amount of force above what is being demonstrated to sucessfully broker Justice. Now lets all get out there and look guilty of something when the obersturmfuerher passes by.

Ah, and here I thought that's what the courts are for. At this point, if the police are dispensing justice, why not do away with the rest of government entirely?

And now for an odd synchronicity: Rodney King will be boxing...a police officer.
