Are the Ron Paul voters actually votin for him because they think he will compliment Giuliani, or because they support Ron Paul over Giuliani?

Mmm...tough choice, but I would have to go with either:

Cthulhu
"Why vote for a lesser evil? Cthulhu for vice-president"

or

Alfred E. Neuman
"You could do worse, and you always have."

The reason I asked, Bob, is that Giuliani has a track record of chewing up and spitting out his underlings, and I somehow doubt Giuliani likes him. I expect Giuliani to pick a conservative to "balance the ticket" for the Republican base. Thompson might be a draw, but I doubt Gingrich would help given his undeservedly low approval ratings among what I call the fascist middle. I voted for Lieberman - it gets an honorable man (in so far as that is possible for any politician) and a Jew in the race and will hopefully mean a Republican will replace him in the Senate, although a liberal Republican as they have in Maine is worse than a conservative Democrat.

Hi Ted,

My only exposure to Lovecraft is through some comics written by Roy Thomas for Marvel Comics in the early 70's; he included some of Lovecraft's concepts in a Doctor Strange series and I also believe, if memory serves me right, he adapted at least one Lovecraft story in one of Marvel's horror anthologies.

I also often hear of Lovecraft because he lived in Rhode Island, as do I, and there is an annual commemoration held in his honor.

I've bought a collection of his work which I intend to read some day along with many other works I've accumulated but have yet to make the time to read.

I've read most of his work as a teen. He often takes too long to build up to too little, but the archaeological aspect of his work always fascinated me. I usually found the stories set in Arkham the least interesting. There was one story though about a house with rooms whose walls met at impossible angles that was of interest. I'm sorry I can't make a "best of" recommendation.

Hi Ted,
What reasons do you think Giuliani would give as to why he does'nt like Dr. Paul? I voted for Dr.Paul because I support him over Giuliani ,but if Giuliani were to win I would definitely want a man like Dr. Paul to hold Giuliani in check as to the rights of the Americans he has been elected to work for.

There's a difference between who one might want (Jack Kemp in '80) and who one actually gets, Dan Quayle.

I generally like Newt Gingrich, but his platform calls explicitly for a pro religious-stance. Does this not make him unpalatable? Or is it an acceptable compromise?

Should we have a Giuliani/Rice vs Clinton/Obama poll, or is that premature?  If so, would someone please submit another interesting new topic?

I'm really worried about this election. I loathe Hilary so much that I registered Democrat just so I can vote against her in the California primary. Guilliani can't beat her by himself I'm afraid. A Guilliani/Rice ticket would be unbeatable, IMHO, but the GOP establishment are too chicken-*&%^ to do it.

In the crazy world of politics anything is possible, but I think both a Guiliani/Rice ticket and a Clinton/Obama ticket are unlikely.

Rice's foreign policy views differ substantially from Guiliani's, not to mention their style. And Rice is unlikely at this stage to bring votes from any part of the Republican-oriented spectrum.

Obama's style, rhetoric, and campaign gaffes make him an unlikely candidate for the VP slot. With the shrewdest manipulator of the past 100 years advising her, Hillary is unlikely to go with Barack. She doesn't need him to get the black Democrat vote, she has that already just by appearing to be a union-favoring, centrist-appearing leftist. He wouldn't bring anything to the ticket she doesn't already have but would bring liabilities she doesn't need.

But then, the fact that Hillary is leading the Democrats (and possibly Guiliani) is already so scary, no choice of running mate could make things any worse.

I'm not so worried about the General election, so long as we have a good candidate, since it is not the polls or popular vote but the electoral college that matters.  I do think another Dan Quayle could hurt, and I simply can't imagine who Giuliani would pick if he does get the nomination.  I hope the Republican convention is after the Democrat convention.

As for Rice, it's a shame we can't channel Reagan's ghost or the like to dragoon her into the post.  If I were Giuliani and wanted her, I'd make her VP and acting Secretary of State.  I wonder if she has personal issues that make her not want to run?  I don't even think she'd need to campaign if she finds that distasteful.

And here we still have 13 months to go...

Ted,

Are you saying you like Condi Rice? I've heard her make good statements from time to time but her months-long push to negotiate with Iran has me pretty much writing her off as a force for good.

It seems like anyone who goes to work for the State Dept ends up being worse than useless.

She is not very high profile and doesn't take her own stands as opposed to the current administration.  But she is more of a hawk than that damned Colin Powell, is obviously qualified, and couldn't hurt the ticket in the general election - which is what a VP pick is usually about.

As for negotiating w/Iran - if we aren't seen as trying, then any military actions we do take we be seen as premature, preemptive and unilateral.  I don't think she's negotiating to give away the store, but to serve notice - at least, I hope.

I'll save any debate about the value of Rice's efforts vis-a-vis Iran for later.

For now, I'll just point out that Thompson is a far preferable pick for V.P., as I'm sure Guiliani is aware. One of Guiliani's obvious weaknesses (strictly in terms of ability to win, not ethically, objectively speaking) is the religious conservatives' view of his character. Thompson can bring a lot of votes in that regard, and the pair would present a more unified ticket for all those inclined to vote Republican.

But the first primary is still a long way off and anything can happen.

Maybe his good friend Msgr. Alan Placa would make an interesting running mate for Giuliani . Then he could gain that religion cred. that those conservatives believe he is neglecting. Ya know, for more votes.... : (

Rice and North Korea ? Paul/Rice ticket looks good to me.
Giuliani is so dirty it's getting  ridiculous.

"Giuliani is so dirty it's getting  ridiculous." -Gigi

Please specify.  You may be right, but otherwise this vague statement is a smear.  For instance, I happen to think Jeff's comment that Thompson would energize the religious right is correct - but Thompson also profited from land deals made in expectation of federal laws that would be passed that made the property he bought increase in value.  Giuliani hasn't ever been accused of anything like this.  So, what is meant by "dirty"?

Well,  Never owning his errors (location of command center WTC, radios), taking credit for much more than he accomplished ie. taxes cut, pot 9/11 efforts,  etc., promoting (not privately)based on loyalty rather then ability ,lying about various and sundry ie. to his wives etc., taking positions that were convinient to getting him posts or winning him elections, then discarding those positions if they hinder his rise (look into his position(s) on education ("Dont worry about it. It's just a political thing, a campaign thing. I'm not going to do anything.") , big gov. vs Laissez-faire capitalism, line-item veto, lawsuits,NRA"extremists" etc.), His big Gov. positions on alternative energy exploration, the internet,(hear his newest threat in the GOP debate) etc., his no show at the Iraqi Study Group and his b.s. about how he's been studying Islamic Terrorism for 30 years (WTF), his associations w/ Ken Lay, Pat Wood III, Patrick Oxford, Karl Rove, Bernard Kierk, Msgr.
