| | I'm trying to think "Cool, Fountainhead punked up a bit. Why not?"
I don't know Ben Fold's sound. But I sure don't care for these lyrics at all. His web site says that he is a Sony artist, so he must have some audience, therefore somebody must like them somewhere.
To be fair, it's cool that he used this theme. But what he did with it really needs some serious editing. How about that rhyming ground with ground for example? Or jumping from the general "you" to "you guys" without even blinking? What the hell is that arm flapping business after dragging some "guys" up some stairs that were never there before? That's just silly. He did rhyme friend with end at the close, but look how he did it!!! (Note also that the plural "you guys" has by now become singular.)
And I love you you're my friend But you got no philosophy Now it's time for this song to end
There's a huge difference between the intentional vagueness of a lot of rock lyrics and plain old lack of even trying. This theme requires a little more clarity, anyway.
I want to, but I just can't relate to this crap at all. It's too mediocre. Sorry.
As the voice is normally distorted beyond normal comprehension in a good deal of punk, maybe only snatches of these lyrics get through and they come off better sung, er... well... interpreted in that manner.
And it could be that his work has improved over time. His "new non-album track" blurb announces his latest hottest hit, a cover version of Dr. Dre's Bitches Ain't Shit.
