As well of course, the lack of conscription helps put the brakes on meglomaniacal endeavors - as witness the increasing difficulty in gaining recruits...

Hey Joe,
Where you gonna run to now?

Rick, you're getting a little too emotional for me to continue arguing with. I know war is hell, people die, etc. I'm emotional, too.

Says you.

We are talking religious fanatics with a history of violence and terrorism. You go have tea and crumpets with a terrorist. I'll pass.

There are many different kinds of warfare both military and non-military. I think if you knew better what war tasted like your honest appetite for tea and crumpets would rocket.

Talk of "calling you out," "trigger happy Rambo" insults...is this how you argue for peace?

The laws of good expression transcend what is being expressed. I just want to get an idea through your thick skull, I don't care if it hurts.

What's amazing is the level of rationalization made toward diplomacy with evil regimes, and the knee-jerk response to anyone who advocates retaliation.

It's far less amazing than the way Team-America-Fuck-Yeah folk dismiss the cost of war, financial and otherwise, with such a fake pretension at remorse.

But that doesn't exclude the possibility that external danger exists, and when one side is consistently rejecting diplomacy and rejecting reasonable solutions, and threatens not just an enemy but a whole segment of a population, there can be no diplomacy

Splash on some Acme crocodile tears......warm up voice...

America, fuck yeah! Comin' again to save the motherfucking day, yeah!
America, fuck yeah! Freedom is the only way, yeah!
Terrorists, your game is through, 'cause now you have to answer to
America, fuck yeah!

Rick, you can quibble about strategy, feasibility, etc. I stand by the belief that even if not feasible, the Iranian regime and any other dictator/terrorist regime has no right to exist and deserve no diplomacy. I don't have to be a rambo style hawk to say that much, any attempt at negotiations with them is to be a hostage to their threats.
Take your tea and crumpets and shove them up your ass.

Hey Joe,
I'm all outta Hendrix quotes now.

Take your tea and crumpets and shove them up your ass.

Say that if you like but you're going to end up eating them and drinking it sooner or latter, as you pointed out yourself, either way so....how about not?

All everyone's doing here is, in effect, 'voting' on what to do, or worse...to NOT do.

When someone makes clear that they threaten *me* and/or some-one/thing I value, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE such is a value to me, I consider 'Dirty Harry' diplomacy automatically appropriate. Some (as is obvious in this thread) take verbal 'threats' lightly.
Clearly, none live in Israel.

The Israelis know that they are the 1st on any 'list' (the US is really 3rd, because it's so big) of threats to 'Western' ways (their theocratic orientation nwst). --- I have no doubt that 'Dirty Harry' is their bottom line way of handling perceived threats, and their bottom line is quicker for hatred-rattling others to reach than the US's. Guess why. Ergo...well, I already argued that earlier on this thread.

Mark my words: If Iran keeps ranting...and building...there WILL be a glass parking lot over there. --- And THEN, I might just praise the munificent wonderfulness of Allah.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."- JS Mill

Couldn't agree more if you paid me to. But my point is that war is not to be lightly entered into and that mankind has learned this and forgotten it to learn and forget it over again several times now.
When someone makes clear that they threaten *me* and/or some-one/thing I value, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE such is a value to me, I consider 'Dirty Harry' diplomacy automatically appropriate
What, without any neural activity even at all?

Yeah, and some have an inkling of how horrific war can be via some of Dailey Thinking's greatest hits- like Gallipoli. I'd like to see you in the trenches telling those who argued against the perpetuation of insanity that they were taking the situation too 'lightly'. But more likely your opinions would be more at home back behind the lines where the oblivious top brass is having a cocktail party.
a glass parking lot over there. --- And THEN, I might just praise the munificent wonderfulness of Allah.
How you have the heart to say such things indicates to me you've got zero notion of the brutality you're glee is attached to. Taking pleasure and reverence in nuclear annihilation? You're being a fool.

Ah, something we agree on. I don't favor "diplomacy" with Iran's regime. If any government intervention is called for at all, it should pretty much be limited to having the FCC to lean on the networks to set up stations which can reach Tehran with reruns of Baywatch and PSAs informing Iranians that cargo ships full of Levis, Madonna CDs, Kentucky bourbon and the latest issue of Penthouse are standing offshore waiting for a regime change that will open Iran's ports to trade.

Or something like that. War not being feasible and "diplomacy" being noxious, creativity is called for.

If war is not feasible, or necessary, I can agree with this, especially if one agrees that war is only a defense, doesn't change the underlying ideas that cause evil regimes.

Hi Thomas,

LOLOLOLOLOL...

That was pretty damn funny. Even with Islam, the Brazilian "Arabs" loved that stuff. I don't know about Iran, but I be they do too.

You should see the rationalizations in order to not call Jack Daniel the Great Satan.

When bartering with the Arabs who worked inside the base I was in for authentic trinkets, I found Playboy and Penthouse magazines were worth far more than their dollar values.  You should see the awe written on their faces as they gaze upon air-brushed photos of beautiful (and naked) American women.  They also loved Doritos and Pizza Hut.  You should see the Persian rug I got for trading in those things Americans take for granted.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I wanted to share that personal anecdote.

Doc Garcia,

I know exactly what you mean. In Saudi Arabia, all the migrant workers from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, etc., had the insides of their trucks covered with teen pop magazine photos. Out in the ville you could pick up 90-minute bootlegs of any band's "Greatest Hits" for a couple of bucks, and they couldn't keep them in stock.

Amazingly, when I was crawling through the abandoned Iraqi bunkers in Kuwait, I found recent editions of those same teen pop magazines and such. Most people don't realize just how eagerly the Arabs (and, I hear, the Persians) dig into American pop culture. I assume this is a lot like ordinary Russians used to be willing to buck up a month's pay for a pair of Levis.

I doubt that it's a cure-all, but I think dropping sanctions on Iran and making their government bear the onus of blocking trade would get a lot Iranians mad at the mullahs instead of at us.
