Oh what a great news!! Congratulations Adam! I have not had such moment myself yet and perhaps can't fully imagine your joy and pride, but I probably won't be too far off if I say that you must be more excited than Emily?! And at 19, the whole world is there in front of her. Is she geared toward academia?

As is traditional in my culture, I treat young people between 13 and 18 as adults in training, responsible for their own decisions and lives.

This is marvelous approach.

That (Adam's attitude with young adults) is 100% Jewish. After the ceremony of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, a boy/girl enters adulthood. Boys at the age 13, while girls at the age 12.

In Judaism, adolescence is considered a mistaken institution, a period of auto-indulgence that promotes bad habits in that sensible period of life, and that in some individuals is prolonged the whole life...

No freedom without responsibility in Judaism.

In the strict sense of "IS," only Ayn Rand was an Objectivist, and only from about 1940 to about 1970.

In a looser sense, Emily's personal philosophy is about as close to Ayn Rand's as her father's was, or mine is.

Emily did spend some of her teenage years claiming to be a Wiccan. But then, no real teenager ever passes through those years without in some way pulling her grownups' leg. Stay sane, and they eventually snap out of it.
