David -- I think a lot of people would agree that Doctor Who went into decline in the 1980s, pretty much after Tom Baker left the show after 7 years. Production values and quality of writing just weren't as good. But there are still some real gem stories from the 1980s. It appears that the BBC are putting much more effort and a great deal more resources into the new series of Doctor Who, which they have now *finally* realised the value of after 15 years off air. Seems they want to make it their Star Trek (ironically, I see that Star Trek has just been cancelled just as Doctor Who is about to return). There's plenty of money, an award-winning special effects team and some top notch names on the list of the production and writing team. The producer is Russell T. Davies, creator of Queer as Folk (the original British version) who whenever interviewed about the new series just seems to bubble with passion and excitement. So it's looking good.
