I did tell you, but you were not listening. The relevant principle of human communication is: examine every speech act in the context of what it accomplishes. Did you really first discover, just now, that politicians will say anything to get elected? If no one ever did anything good for a bad reason, the few good things one might say about Bush would vanish as readily as the many good things about Clinton...
