I have heard that this DVD is a 'revised' version - in what way is it different from the video I possess, gotten when it first came out?

(Sorry, Robert, I can't resist!)

Oh my god.  There's a subject.  There's a predicate.  There's proper punctuation.  My god, Robert, it's a complete sentence!

This is one of my favorite movies and one of the few I own a copy of.  The story is really good and nothing at all like typical animated movies.  I was left with the impression that the ultimate struggle of the giant robot was to either become who he wanted to be or become what he was made to be.  I dont think it is fair to say that the central theme of the movie is whether AI is to be treated as a 'human' (person would be a better term to use, since there can be 'humans' that are not considered persons)  All the major charachters treat him as either a threat or as a friend, it seems the dichotomy isn't really between being a person vs. being a robot, but being a threat (just because he is big and powerful) and being a friend (getting to know what he is actually like)

The animation is also excellent, but I am perhaps biased on this because the robot was primarily done with the same program that I do animation in.  But the overall story is very enjoyable and emotive.

Don't agree.
Mind you, I read the original picture book version when I was 10 so that's an extra standard I hold the film up to. The book is called 'The Iron Man' and is a story of more power and simplicity. Nice to see a Poet Laureate worthy of his honor.

It's the story of a boy teaming up with a giant and what they do for each other. The situational comedy detracts from that, the tone of their adversity demeans them and most of all the lack of character in The Giant undermines it all.

Vin  Diesel seems impressed with his work in 'the making of' commentary but despite his carefully directed grunts and groans the effect fails to give life to the character. Far from being a main character, it's as though The Giant were more akin to the T-Rex in J' Park or Han Solo's "Tauntaun". Not as it should be.

This leaves the film high and dry. All you have left is the goings on between boy and Mom, boy and Mr Scrapyard, antagonist and boy, antagonist and Frasier's Dad.

Two stars only.
