it was Robert Hessen who convinced me to look into the films of Preston Sturgis. I am very grateful that he did. I'll have more to say on Sturgis at another time, but meanwhile, I think anyone who spends the time to see this film will be happy they did.

Robert Hessen is a man of intelligence, wit, and taste.

Sturges was one of the most original and brilliant writers-turned-director. In addition to Sullivan's Travels, you should also watch The Great McGinty (about political corruption); Christmas in July (about ambition and Pure Dumb Luck); Hail The Conquering Hero (about heroism); Unfaithfully Yours (about jealousy); The Lady Eve; The Palm Beach Story; and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek.

Before the studios allowed writers to direct their own work, Sturges wrote a number of films directed by others: The Power and the Glory, Remember the Night; If I Were King, Imitation of Life, The Good Fairy, and Easy Living.
