| | I think this is a truly outstanding movie. But I'm a little jealous of Jennifer's comment about Mandy Patinkin -- I thought only I had a high and fine enough soul to appreciate his performance. ;-)
This film is a bit like 'Groundhog Day' and 'That Thing You Do' (two more favorites) -- a kind of deceptively simple, low-key wonderful. The story is told in a conventional way with a conventional sit-com-like atmosphere -- but it isn't a conventional movie at all.
It's also interesting in that this finally seems to be a "magic realism" movie that works and that's inspiring, not malevolent. The film makers exploit the possibilities that movies offer in a way that usually only clever cartoons do.
Ultimately, I think this movie is so good because it's told in the guise -- and under the cover of -- a child's fairy tale. This allows it to be highly romantic, heroic, and epic all at once.
Nothing is sweeter than, at the end, Inigo finally getting his revenge and Wesley finally getting his girl!
