The thing with illegal aliens is that there are different types.

Many in the border states have simply invaded for the social services and slightly better living conditions. They would leave or work if the social programs ended.

Then there are many in the North who have semi-skilled jobs that pay above (sometimes well above) the minimum wage. If you see an illegal with a regular job you can be sure he is both making at least if not more than minimum wage, and he is paying payroll taxes he will never collect on. I knew a restauranteur who happily payed his Mexican staff $15/hr in the late 1980's, and who provided them with a house to live in, rent free. He employed about a dozen to 15 workers. These guys (of whom two became close friends of mine) were both harder working and much better adjusted than most Americans. Their favorite word was flojo ("lazy" or literally "weak") to describe the Americans.

The third, and smallest class, are unskilled day-laborers who make minimum wage or below. These are the ones who let businessmen take advantage of them. But the problem is not that they are slaves, since they were not captured in Mexico and brought here to work against their wills. It is that we do not legally let people work for less than the minimum wage whether they are illegal immigrants or not.

Ted, an interesting tangent there. I remember reading from the Texas department of Revenue that they did a study on illegal and legal workers. And they found the illegal ones took less out in benefits than they put in as taxes, where as the legals took out more than they put in. I'm not saying some folks shouldn't be concerned about illegals, but I'm going to say that probably that most illegals being not very literate in the english language and not knowing their way around the US or State level bureaucracy are not going to be apt to exploit it compared to native citizens (or denizens?). So, take it with a grain of salt, I guess, that not every illegal is out to snarf on the state trough. Although, I suspect the movement of illegals in border states would be radically lower if certain benefits weren't so easily given or non-existent (like healthcare and education for the kids).

Just speculating, but one reason they might not be taking more out is because they are reluctant (knowing they are illegal) to draw more attention to themselves. Of course, if this is true, then we could expect they would likely conform to the norm - accept/take out more benefits - if they were suddenly made legal.

I haven't yet got the clip but if you missed today's show you missed a good one. Excoriated an Obama communications staffer, Anita Dunne, with her incriminating quotes of her admiration Mao Tse Tung.

Anyone who doesn't watch Beck doesn't know what's going on in this country.

This doesn't surprise me, if only because we were selling a book of Mao quotes at Tower Records as if it were apple pie. Also, the author of MUSIC OF YES, Bill Martin, who is a professor of philosophy at DePaul University in Chicago, was in a punk band called Chairman Mao, and quotes Mao favorably throughout the book.

"If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow..."

I don't care for Beck's drama, but the stories on his shows are amazing.  I wouldn't have a clue about all of the creeps Obama is appointing without it.

Okay... the two anecdotes Anita Dunn cites pass for reasonable advice (don't leave it to others to determine your goals and means). Yet there is ample anecdotal material from a broad variety of other sources that she could have chosen. This makes her selection of Mao Tse-Tung a rather pointed effort - an intentional message - and rather stupid for a White House Communicator.

Obama is an ivory tower type of thinker, divorced from the real world of action and consequences. He is all about being 'on message', but only his Socialistic message. He's about change, alright, just the wrong type.

Anita Dunn has a distinctive and annoying habit of licking her lips and sticking out her tongue when she speaks. I had thought that that behaviour might be a side effect of taking lithium, but in searching the subject it doesn't appear to be a symptom. Does anyone have any other explanation for this unusual habit?

Tardive dyskinesia, often a side effect of anti-psychotic drugs, or Methamphetamine intoxication.

I watched this, and smiled through the whole thing. Beck's imagery, and not-so-subtle nod to The Fountainhead, was a whole bunch of fun.  Loved it.

Do I Have Blood on my Cheeks?

I know I keep saying it, but this opening clip is one of Beck best yet. Absolutely hilarious and spot on. I suppose that means he's on an upward trajectory.

For those who have been curious of my opinion of Republicans, Beck expresses my sentiments for the party of Specter, McCain and Lindsay Graham quite admirably.

Apparently Fox has the copyright to the Beck videos, and has pulled them from Youtube.

Inconvenient, but fair enough.
