Well Daniel Diogenes, You've had your rant. Did you want to actually discuss the merit (or lack therof) of your rant, or do you just want to rant until you get moderated so that you can further bolster your illusions about Objectivism? Sure, some so called Objectevists may hold the beliefs you describe, but you're over-generalizing the whole thing into an attack on every Objectist and Objectivism as a whole. That's not too clever. So what's it going to be?

Daniel D.,

You've got too much wild anger for you to make your point, me thinks. Focus it to Batman levels and have a go.

It's objectivists who are the anti-individualists, not me.

Or rather, I should say, that objectivists are only pro-individualist with regard to themselves.  They wish to deny it to all those besides themselves and their close circle of sneering narcissists.  They want the unfettered freedom to do as they please, but everyone else should be treated with no real regard for their individuality.

Objectivists then just turn around and make up obvious lies.  Just like you're now manufacturing the lie that I'm speaking in "anger" (which is obviously false... it's just a ploy to create an excuse to dismiss my claims).

If everything a person says and does dares to question "objectivism" or any clique of objectivists in any way, a campaign of obvious lies is mounted against that person and they are blacklisted.

Your whole movement is nothing more than a curious mixture of preschool dishonesty, viciousness and shamelessness, and adolescent vanity all rolled up into one.

Objectivism is a neurotic cannibal movement.

You're right, Daniel. What was I thinking joining a "shameless" movement? I should have found a shameful one!

I think I've found the image we should use for Daniel's SOLO pic:

Waaaaaaah, you have no real regard for my individuality because I'm not an Objectivist! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

CEO's have their unions and their collusions and their price-fixing.  Wal-Mart has purchased the federal and local governments, to get special zoning privileges and entire zoning ordinances changed, so they can have the choicest locations and unfair advantages that almost nobody else has.

Yet Wal-Mart and other such pseudo-capitalist, feudalistic monoliths are cheered and lauded by Objectivist societies such as ARI, TOC, and SOLO.  This despite the violation of laissez-faire.

Wow, you're just completely, astoundingly wrong here. For instance, see the discussion that followed my own article about Wal-Mart here. Some of Wal-Mart's shadier practices were brought up and condemned, including their use of eminent domain.

(Somehow, I doubt Daniel will actually follow that link. After all, it might puncture his dearly-held belief that Objectivism is nothing but a pathology looking for an excuse!)

Ethan,

I was the one who first sanctioned him. My idea was to welcome him to Solo and help with the moderated status all beginners pass through. I presumed he was interested in the ideas. I was wrong.

I have asked him a couple of questions twice, now. One involves whether he is now willing to revise his view of Objectivism since his post got put up. I didn't ask him to revise it. He stated flat out that he would. Well he hasn't even tried.

Now after others have joined in, he has not answered any of my questions nor responded to my welcome. He only posts to pick a fight with those critical of him.

So I stand corrected. He is a troll, an asshole, pond scum.

And a liar to boot.

I am done with him. Have fun baiting him if you like these things. I have better things to do.

Michael

Sarah House wrote: "Diogenes: Greek philosopher and founder of the Cynic school who advocated self-control and the pursuit of virtue through simple living. He is said to have once wandered through the streets of Athens with a lantern in daylight, searching for an honest man. [emphasis added]"
That story is probably a very old urban legend.  When researching this
http://www.coin-newbies.com/articles/diogenes.html
and the longer article upon which it is based, I found that just about everything we know about Diogenes the Cynic from Sinope is told by the later man named Diogenes Laertius.  That later's Lives of the Eminent Philosophers has its own problems.  In any event, the story of the Diogenes looking for an honest man has an independent existence.  It is not attested by the best original sources.

Daniel wrote: "A common character flaw in Objectivists arises from this instilled terror of not being outstanding... "

And yet it is so easy to stand out.  In fact, it is downright scary that someone like me can earn a literary award from a Congressionally chartered institution for an essay that corrects the Encyclopedia Britannica, that you have to wonder just how low our standards for originality are.

Be that as it may, I think that Diogenes himself might have asked who did this "instilling" you speak of.  Diogenes himself might show up with a still and challenge you to instill terror with it.

(When Plato defined man as a "featherless biped" Diogenes showed up the next day with a plucked chicken.)

Michael,

Since Diogenes of Sinope isn't supposed to have left any writings, what are the best original sources on him?

Michael,

Thanks for the info. I was just going off of a quick google.

Daniel D.,

I'm not an Objectivist. That you don't bother to find that out is a very strong indication that you're more interested in ranting than discussing. I'm probably the only person you haven't pissed off yet and still willing to talk with you, but only if you'll stop ad homineming and really address something. Even then, I'd hardly be the one to defend Objectivism proper, but you've already burned those bridges.

See Ed Thompson's post 13 on the OUR CHRIS IS NOT WELL thread for the antidote to this poison. Hell, the whole thread is a testimonial to the wrongness of this claim.

Speak for yourself, Joe. I personally plan to feast on Chris's insides once he finally shuffles off this mortal coil, preferably while admiring my own beautiful face in a mirror I will keep nearby.
