Usually I find I have to know someone for more than a couple phone calls to start coming up with insulting names for them.

Promiscuous Turd.

Thanks, all, to anyone I might have persuaded to read James's book, and to any I may have insulted along the way. I appreciated the opportunity to participate on these forums, and only hope that a few have been made a little more interested in Rand's side of the story.

I'm sure that many other subjects would have been more pleasurable, but no matter how unpleasant, some jobs have to be done when you see an injustice occurring and know that other people don't realize it is happening. As Ayn Rand said, the true test of a principle is when it is difficult to stand by it, not when it is convenient and easy. The battle for free speech, for example, is not won defending the popular but the unpopular. Solo has lived up to the principle of free discourse and shown an abiding devotion to truth and truth-seeking even when it was not pleasant -- and I salute the courage it took for that to be allowed to occur here despite obvious conflicts of interest of a personal nature.

Congratulations to those who made that possible.

Casey Fahy

Peace out -- until Solo 2.

Despite what Lindsay Perigo and James Heaps-Nelson have plausibly recently written, when considering the character and personality of James Valliant and Casey Fahy, the terms "cultist" and "Randroid" come immediately to mind. So too "evader," "second-hander," and "social metaphysician." So too "collectivist" and "self-sacrificer" -- as in religious and joiner types of an odd and malevolent Randian sect who defer exclusively to her divine authority and slavishly take her word on faith.

I think people here are badly underestimating the quiet but immense power of Ayn Rand. Ideas really do matter. So too idealism. They rule people's lives. In this regard, Rand's intellectual and ideological seductiveness and charisma is simply overwhelming. Unfortunately for the planet, human history, and the ascent of man -- there is moralizing, psychologizing, emotional repression, and intellectual bullying on practically every page of her non-fiction and latter fiction. It is a stunning contradiction of rational liberal culture and her literal philosophy.

Valliant and Fahy are like natural scholars of the Talmud or Hadith who accidently wandered upon Objectivism and, bizarrely, became converted to this belief-system. But they maintain their old attitude, approach, and personal nature. They diligently pour over every word and half-thought of Rand, and then use their high intelligence to gain a kind of ersatz understanding of the material. This makes them very strange people -- but it doesn't make them Objectivists. Or if it does -- then Objectivism is an evil thing.

It's dangerous to read Nietzsche, especially when you're young. Rand is far, far worse. The power of ideas and idealism is almost limitless. Those created by Ayn Rand, and their ability to impact people -- for good and ill -- should not be underestimated.

On "practically every page"?? Come on! I do think that AR dismissed people she disagreed with too casually in some cases, but this is as wild an accusation as any about her that I've ever heard. Making such statements doesn't earn credibility, Andre.

Further, you should have higher standards than to associate with people who admire an individual whom you believe was such a rabid moralizer, psychologizer, emotional repressor, and intellectual bully. Good grief.

Andre,

I can certainly recognize a religious mantra when it's repeated mindlessly.

Re: post 218.  I was sure that quote sounded really, really familiar.  Atlas Shrugged, page 460 (paperback):  Francisco says to Hank, "Tell me what a man finds sexually attractive and I will tell you his entire philosophy of life.  Show me the woman he sleeps with and I will tell you his valuation of himself."

(And by the way, I second that, Jon Trager!)

Phil sez:

With Rand's statements like this, what does she intend to convey? I always assumed she meant what *category* of person, such as a slut vs. a producer, a sloth vs. an energetic person, a vicious person vs. a nice one. When someone makes an aphorism, as Rand was wont to do, you have to project a context in which it applies.

Well put, Phil.

I'd like to take this opportunity to officially state, that as the only Earthly possesor of a viable Warp Drive and Time Machine, that under no circumstances did Laure or her post get stuck in anything like a "time warp." Unless, that is, I accidently left the settings on my machine to...uh-oh...... :-(

Andre,

Some of Atlas has a "now hear this" tone to it, but there's a context. The world is being taken over by socialist dictatorships. I don't think people should read the excerpted Galt's Speech before reading Atlas and getting the context.

Also, doing positive philosophy is hard. Rand did more of it , more accurately, than anyone I know, but it is still easier to make insightful, devastating commentary on the world as it exists than to do positive philosophy.

(I don't know; I'm definitely in some sort of weird state on this thread.  Gravitational anomaly?  Rip in the structure of space-time?  Not sure.  I can only read the second-to-last post on this thread.  In my Index list, I can see:
 (231) James Heaps-Nelson - 11/30, 11:05am - Andre, Some of Atlas has a "now hear this" tone to it...

but I cannot get to this post yet!! But, once I post THIS one, I'll be able to read James' post, but then mine will appear in the index but be inaccessible.)

Okay, I confess. And formally apologize -- to Laure, James, and everyone. I am currently mucking about -- rather irresponsibly, I admit -- with the local space-time continuum. But this is only temporary and only because my #%$!*#!%# worm-hole generator is on the fritz. I bought it at an outlet store in one of the lesser neighborhoods of Rigel Prime, so I guess I deserve this. :-(  But the point is, in my other incarnation (well, one of them) as Lord High Commissioner of Inter-Galactic law enforcement, I'm unavoidably involved in a rather serious situation involving rebellion by mutant Denebian space monkeys in the far Delta Quadrant. I have to attend to this, so the current very temporary time-space-SOLO posting anomalies can't be helped. Sorry.
