Msr. Bisno-

Thank you, whatever our differences might be, for speaking the truth first and foremost, and for refusing to remain silent wherever hatred is found and no matter whom the target.

Though I do feel I must correct one thing; I am absolutely most definitely a "miss" and not a "madame", in all senses of these words.

my regards,

"Well, just pretend I'm a Muslim.  You won't object to my "mass killing" then..."

This is offensive beyond words. Do you actually believe that anyone on this forum thinks this way? Either you truly are paranoid, and even more so than I thought, or you have taken to straw man arguments.

For all who care.  I've placed Orion under moderation.  Lindsay's out of town, so you can all throw your usual attacks about "censorship" and "suppression of the truth" my way.  Since putting him on moderation, I've also deleted some of his posts due to high insult/content ratio.  I ask that people here try not to provoke him since he doesn't have the advantage of unmoderated response.

Also, Scott DeSalvo said that Eli Sacks was "sacked" for not using capital letters.  Actually, he was moderated and asked to use capitals. He left on his own rather than conform to the rules of the English language.

Any other complaints about the iron fist of SOLO administration while I'm here?

Joe:

Congratulations on really good timing. You posted this all of 5 minutes after I sent a complaint to Linz about Orion getting out of hand.

Hey Joe:

I said Eli got 'sacked' as a play on words with his last name (Sacks). I understand and appreciate that he was not banned, kicked off, or anything else. Truth be told, I was under the impression that the main reason he got put under moderation was because he refused to use capital letters where appropriate. I couldn't tell you one way or the other whether the CONTENT of his posts merited moderation, because I usually skipped his posts. I think Eli was a bit of a rabble rouser and almost certainly not an Objectivist. As I have said a million times, you have an unreserved right to moderate or ban or grant unrestricted access to whoever you would care to, no matter what anyone thinks. It's your show.

Another update.  Evidently Orion has left in a huff again.  And he's deleted his articles and several of his posts as well.  Just in case anyone is wondering what happened to his posts.

I would like to remind everyone that when you submit content to the site, SOLO gains the right to print it, as you keep the right to reprint in other mediums (unless there's a specific negotiation made).  Read the Legal Disclaimer, which has been up for years.  Throwing a tantrum and deleting articles from this site is a violation of our property rights.  I consider the act of deleting old content a form of vandalism.

But since we seem to have immature people doing it anyway, I've restricted the editing policy on the forums and galleries.  You can still edit it, but only within 24 hours.

Also, a couple weeks ago I inactivated the account of one of the trolls on this site, Martin Shultz.  I do ask that guests to this site, especially non-Objectivists, try to maintain some level of civility.

Hi Joe,

You have the right to moderate anyone you wish. I wish to go on the record stating that this site is far more tolerant of differing opions than most. I appreciate it each day and think that it draws a high quality debates and good solid contributions. I really do take no offense at the names I was called, and confess that once the discussion got beyond the realm of reasonable discourse, I was just baiting Orion with my posts. Perhaps not the best thing to do with people, but I felt the situtaion was a bit extreme. I was sad to see Orion's intractability on this issue. I often enjoyed his posts to several threads and thought he had great taste in movies. If I offended anyone with my "baiting" posts, I offer my appologies.

Joe, I'm very glad you decided to put Orion under moderation. Apart from any other problem, this site was beginning to revolve around him, with people on various threads finding it necessary to respond to him -- and he seemed to love it.

Mr. Rowlands,
I have no doubt that you made the right decision. Most of us value SOLOHQ forum very much and appreciate the work you, Linz and others have done to maintain this lively site. And that's why we protest those posts by Orion. Well, at least partially, because we want to continue to be able to post here.

Regards,

Hong

My Random House Webster's Dictionary defines Genocide as:
"The deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group."

As I've said already, I think it's wrong to exterminate everyone that claims to be a Muslim. But, does anyone else see a problem with exterminating a political group, or a cultural group, of Nihilists all hell-bent on killing you? I think not. If it's only the extremists. The West de-Nazified Germany. To hate Nazis is not to hate all, or even most, Germans. Most people consider Nazism, pure evil.

I think that if Orion stuck with what Lindsay recommended, he'd have (or I'd hope) an easier time of it here.
I share - and I know I'm not alone on this - his contempt for Islam. The battle is mainly intellectual. Let us stop this childish fight and get on with that more important battle. I suggest Orion take a deep breath, ignore Ring, and come back with more light than heat.

Joe,

What's this I hear about you putting Orion on medication?  What right do you have to do that?  Who do you think you are, the Government!?  Why, I'm so upset I could ...  Wait, that's 'moderation'.  Well, that's completely different.

Never mind.

I've apologised to Joe that things were so dull & quiet in my absence.

I also told him he did the right thing.

I would say that publicly even if I disagreed with him privately.

But I don't disagree with him privately. Orion, alas, abused the extra consideration we gave him. I personally went out on a limb for him. I thought I had reached him privately, but he treated my solicitude as a license to intensify his orgy of hate.

I don't think he is the attention-seeker some folk here believe he is; I believed he was still amenable to reason & could garner his righteous fury against vile Islamo-fascism in such a way as to smite actual Islamo-fascists & exempt those Muslims who are *not*. On this second point I was wrong.

That said, I was also unimpressed to find private SOLO-mail awaiting me from someone who trashes SOLO elsewhere, & who gloried in the grinding up of animals here, shedding crocodile tears about the ruination Orion was about to wreak on SOLO! Orion might be many things, but a hypocrite he is not.

Nor am I impressed by the smug jokes about "medication" above. Part of the reason I was extra patient with Orion is that I became convinced that the problematic part of his behaviour was clinical in origin, & that he may well be in need of literal medication to bring it under control, if he isn't already on it. As you all know, I'm the last one to be touting nauseating PC-pseudo-sensibility towards self-created losers who invent psycho-babble excuses for their behaviour, but I would still urge folk to engage their brains before their fingers when making gleeful jokes about someone's *genuine* psychiatric condition after it has become obvious that he *has* one.

Ahh, come on.  Orion isn't nuts. I think he just found a way rationalize the extermination of folks with ideas that might lead to murder.  I don't think he was willing to accept any alternatives to 'search and destroy' because to him they seemed prevarications and hedging of 'True Objectivity'--ignoring that Wartime Objectivism is about combating ideas with Ideas, and swords with swords, and the two should rarely be mixed (fighting ideas with swords and swords with ideas, that is) if we wish to maintain our own status as sentient, non-force-initiating humans with unassailable rights.  I really disliked the way Orion tried to Syko-aNaLysIze everything and everyone, partly because I think this is what led to such a terrible, ham-fisted conclusion.

On a lighter note:

Evidence-proofing, as in Orion's "good cop - bad cop conspiracy theory to explain why some Muslims act like rational people but must be killed anyway," is a clinical symptom that the patient is not merely delusional, but delusion-centered. That it is also bad epistemology is incidental: sane people make errors, but when confronted with evidence check their reasoning, find the error, and change their minds. The evidence-proofing reaction is not an error but a symptom.

Yeah, that was a pretty silly thing to argue.  But what's wrong with saying "you're just dead-fucking-wrong, buddy" instead of "you're loony tunes, man; seek help"?   I've told plenty of people about the clear benefits of capitalism over socialism--cited evidence, shown graphs, charted the stars and consulted the Oracle at Delphi with them, but some remain steadfast in their wrong-itude.  Are they nuts?

Jeremy,

What is wrong is that when one says "you are wrong" one is ready to prove that the other is wrong - and "evidence-proofing" precludes argument just as effectively as it precludes thought. The concept of insanity makes it possible to distinguish those who can think, and with whom one might productively argue, from those who can't, so that the rational person will not make the error of arguing with someone to whom arguments are immaterial.
