I like the article. My own parents still incessantly talk to me this way, implying that they know my best interests, and I don't have a clue. It's my own peculiar pet peeve that instead of letting me make my own decisions about what I need to do and when I need to do it, they constantly give out unsolicited "advice" when I neither want it, nor ask for it. Especially when it comes to issues concerning college (where I am footing over 95% of the bill), or work, or even my romantic life. I have tried telling them how I feel, but they still insist that they know better than I do. It's MY life DAMNIT!

I'm glad you liked it, Adam. I myself am glad to know that I'm not the only one offended by such crass behavior, and that I'm not just touchy.

My parents used to do this, and my brother still does from time to time. He did this in front of the rest of the family once, and I told him, "If I wanted your opinion, I'd beat it out of you with the rest of the shit."

I haven't gotten much in the way of unsolicited advice after that.

People say that they do that kind of thing in the best interest of the target of their advice. The question such people refuse to answer is, "What possible interest could be served for a person by instructing him in a way that implies that he is basically incompetent to handle his own affairs?" My parents keep expecting me to crash and burn, in fact, most everyone I know thinks that Objectivism is going to be my ultimate undoing (or so they hope). I think it's kind of ironic that the only person that seems to be on my side is Catholic. Who would have thought?!

Your only ally is Catholic? Amusing irony, that. I've mentioned Ayn Rand to my parents, but their only concern is that I don't get sucked into "the cult". >^..^<

If I think someone about whom I care is harming himself or herself (or others) with poor decisions, I am going to say so whether that person likes it or not.

If that person continues to act that way, I will simply distance myself from that person and stop caring.
