BBOvenGuy --

I see your point about not trusting Joss. I guess it all depends on what you expect from a show and a showrunner. I don't think just because you create a show you have to stay with it forever and ever. When Steven Bochco left his creation LA Law in the hands of David Kelley, the show did fine. When David Kelley left it went downhill. Doesn't mean I would never watch another show by those guys because I don't "trust" them.

And JW stayed very close to Buffy for five years, despite also working on Angel and whatever features he was re-writing for big bucks. If you ask me, the only good Buffy episodes last year were written and directed by him, including the musical which he'd wanted to do for ages. That doesnt indicate a short attention span to me. If Firefly had five good years and then two sucky ones, I'd be a happy camper.

WW: "Sorry. Love doesn't pay the bills. Unless you are working Lower Wacker in Chicago.

How do you propose we measure "love"?"

Money, just like pretty much everything else. Love can pay the bills. I thought I made this point pretty clear.

Hi John!

Now, if the White Hats heard me anyway, how could 'they' have ruined my thread? LOL!

Thank you John.

I'd like to continue on some aspects of Firefly but will start a new thread as this one is so long it takes ages to load now!

See you on the flip! :)

Joy :))

Joy,

I know you're starting a new thread, but I just wanted to compliment you on a well-written article and your infinite patience in responding to these comments (I have to say, I would have resorted to name-calling by now, were I in your shoes).
I too, am a fan of Firefly. I was a huge fan of Buffy as well but, like a few other posters here, my interest in the series diminished during seasons 5 and 6. After just a handful of episodes however, Firefly has done what it took Buffy two seasons to do- capture my heart completely. I share your hope that the show'll be picked up by UPN.
Again, my compliments and also, my condolences. It's too bad that this discussion was co-opted and ruined by this weird vendetta-thing these people have.
Morbid and creepifying, if you ask me.

Hi Jarad! :)

Thank you very much for your kind words. I too could have done without the vendetta being brought here. It was quite discourteous but I've learned that courtesy in general seems to get checked at the portal when people get on the Internet. :)

I would hope that people wouldn't act like this face to face so why do it here .. but then, maybe I'm not so certain they wouldn't be this way face to face either. LOL!

Morbid and creepifying!! LOL! Yes.

But like Reynolds, I can handle morbid and creepifying. *grin*

Stay tuned .... :)

Joy :)

I can't believe all the idiocity I've read in this
thread. Firefly was the only hope of watching
anything at all on a Friday. Firefly had a contageon(?) that once anyone who could follow
the program would catch. The script was superb
and unique, and unfortunately "some" people can't
grasp the concept of an over-population of the
Chinese having any influence on future generations. The photography and graphics make
"Enterprise" look sick, and for the life of me I
can't understand how a show like "Enterprise"
has stayed on the air, except for the fact that
the network (UPN) didn't throw in the towel and
has stuck it out, although in my oppinion, they
would be wise to replace "Enterprise" with
"Firefly". The acting in "Firefly", on the whole
has been good and the premiss of the show is
in the realm of reality, more so than any of the
"Star Trek" series. I'm not putting down any
of the Star Trek shows, I'm just saying that in
the "outer-space" genre, "Firefly" is at the
top of believability. I'd like to know where
T.Kirsch gets his "inside information". I believe
I see a personal vendetta against "Firefly" and
whatever Kirsch's personal problem is, don't take it out on the merits of "Firefly". You may not
agree with those of us who love this show, but
then you would rather spew venum and I suspect
that seeing your name in print, even on this
thread, is a big head-swell for you.
I taped every episode of "Firefly" and am glad
I did. There are so many little things that are
hard to pick up on in one viewing. The more I
watch this ingenius and creatively produced show,
the more I want more episodes.
Last note: How do "they" know just how popular
or unpopular a show is? 99 percent of us aren't
in a Roper or Gallup pole. Most people don't
have the time or perhaps the mailing info needed to write their concerns or complaints to the
networks. For every one (1) letter or post card
they receive, they should figure there are hundreds more who feel the same and didn't write.
Joss Whedon - if you read this, don't give up
on "Firefly", Fox had other agenda they feel
we'd like better, like Millionaire Bachelor and
other voyeuristic le-suh!

I know this is a Firefly thread, but I can't resist sticking up for seasons 5 and 6 of Buffy. I loved those seasons as much as any of the ones preceding them, even 2 and 3. The musical was my favorite episode. I think the show is as strong as ever. I'm not going to get into a big debate about this, but I wanted to state my opinion.

As of today, both UPN and surprisingly (but maybe not so much) Sci-Fi have chosen to pass on Firefly.
Reading your article gave me chills and made me glad that I managed to tape most of the episodes.
It also made me realize that maybe Firefly's problem is that it's *too good*. It requires people to actually pay attention and listen. And maybe think about what they're watching. (Is that Chinese they're speaking? Why? People are shooting some pistols...but they're not normal guns. Why? They're in a space ship...but it's not like Star Trek. Why?)
Fox dropped the ball big time on this show. But it's Fox. They have their own agenda. (Think not? Watch their news.)
Maybe we're not supposed to be watching anything deep...or challenging. Maybe we're just supposed to sit in front of the TV and let the pictures and sounds of crap like "Joe Millionaire" and "Man vs Beast" wash over us as our brains turn to mush.
If it's indeed about money, I hope Joss Whedon can get the show produced out of Canada (original home of the X-Files productions) where it can be done cheaper.
If it's about thinking that the story and characters are "too complex", then people are dumber than I thought and maybe we don't deserve Firefly in the first place.

Someone just posted a link to this board in one of the Firefly Forum threads on Prospero...so I may not be the only one coming in to stir things up again ;-)

I love Firefly, and its the kind of show I could have loved for years to come (and will love for years to come...as I plan to keep watching my tapes again and again until they fall apart since watching old episodes of Firefly is more entertaining than watching new episodes of just about every other program on tv right now).

I can understand the fact that that Firefly lacked a mass-appeal factor (one that many pointless shows still on television seem to have, much to my dismay) but it doesn't make it any easier to stomach the fact that it is gone. I also comprehend the fact that television is a business...with the goal of making money (primarily through advertising). Firefly may not have gotten the best ratings, but there was a certain value that was certainly overloooked by the networks and advertisers in this case.

Advertisers and telvision networks seem to have fallen into a rut where they simply care about numbers. Numbers are important, but sometimes they aren't all that matters. I tape several shows that I'm not home to watch, but with the execption of Push, Nevada and Firefly (and a handful of shows in telvision seasons past) I've taped over them all. I'm not alone...most fans of the show have also recorded it in some fashion (and kept it) or are in the process of trying to procure a set of tapes/dvds. The ratings may have been low for Firefly, but the number of times that the ads shown during its episodes will ultimately be seen/re-seen is probably much higher than any other program that was aired at the same time. Nielsen has no effective way of measuring re-viewing of recorded programs...and advertisers, ratings folks, and networks seem content to go along ignoring the fact that shows like Firefly (and don't even get me started on Push, Nevada) can ultimately give advertisers more bang for their buck in the long run.

Maybe someday they'll figure it out...but in the meantime I'll be watching my Firefly tapes, content in knowing that there are still some original ideas out there in the entertainment industry.

Amen to that!

I totally agree and we watch the episodes we've recorded over and over. LOL! My husband has also been able to find mpeg files on the web to download so we can watch the episodes on our computer too. Buying a DVD set would be the ideal solution and I'm hoping that Firefly was popular enough to warrant such an offering.

I'm much richer for having 12 hours of Firefly at all! It has certainly provided me with pleasure, mental exercise and inspiration!

Thanks for speaking up! I hope the link you found directed you to the original article instead of here directly. This thread has gotten so large that it takes a while to load. Of course, in the Forum section we can always start a new discussion. I started one a while back about Book and other elements of Firefly. :)

Wow, been some time since the last post here.

I had the great pleasure of actually meeting Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk ("Jayne" and "Wash") this week (they were both in Vancouver on different film projects) and they told me that the DVDs of the 11 aired and the 3 unaired episodes would be out in DVD this December. Also Joss is working on a big screen movie of Firefly which may start shooting as early as this fall.

Just thought you would like to know.

This is a great forum! I love Firefly! Sorry the show is over, though. I'm brazilian and local FOX started airing Firefly only 2 months ago. I became instantly fascinated by it and went (of course!) looking for anything that had to do with it on the net. It was a shock when I found out that I had already watched half of what that is to. How sad! I sincerely hate Buffy and Angel, so I was intriged to take a look at Whedon's new show, specially because it had nothing to do with vampires. And I agree with every word of your article, Joy! I used to write about series for a website here in Brazil and I had impressions just as thoughtful and philosophical about the show I chose to write (Sports Night, Will and Grace and Dawson's Creek, at the time) and I received offensive msgs like the one posted by that guy T. Kirsch. If only more people spent that kind of energy for better reasons! Well, I wrote to let you know that the show is being a huge success around here airing prime time saturday night! We brasilians hope that the DVD will be released real soon! Hugs, Vicki

This should interest you:

http://www2.foxstore.com/detail.html?item=960

Four DVD set for $40, includes the aforementioned unaired episodes, plus commentary and other such DVD goodies. Rumor has it that a Firefly movie will be forthcoming, the validity of these claims I don't know. It would be nice if that was the case, though!

The film is finally rated as being in production by Universal, due to high DVD sales. A superb show that may yet live again!
