Ayn Rand quoted on "Criminal Minds"
Posted by Erica Schulz on 12/11, 11:33am
"We are all brothers under the skin. And I, for one, would be willing to skin all of humanity to prove it."
For those of you who are not familiar with "Criminal Minds":

It is another of CBS' standard crime procedurals, like CSI, NCIS, Without a Trace, etc.   It focuses on the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI (profilers), and the BAU team tracks down serial killers all over the country. The show always features spoken quotes (by the show's actors) from various writers, philosophers, etc., at the beginning and end of every case. Usually the quote directly pertains, in some way, to the episode's story.

I actually posted this because I am unfamiliar with this quote of Rand's, and I was wondering in what context she made this statement. A tiny bit of web research revealed that the "We are all brothers under the skin" part is from the Bible, but I would like to know more about her meaning.

This quote appeared at the beginning of the episode, and the show maintained the "brothers" theme with a quote at the end of the episode by William Shakespeare---"For he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother."

I was initially offended (given the nature of the stories of the show) by the use of Rand's quote of  "willing to skin all of humanity" (for any reason) on a show that focuses on serial killers, but it did eventually make sense as the story this week had the BAU tracking a serial killer targeting cops on duty, and the final quote came after the funeral of a police officer, attended by a BAU team member who was a former beat cop.

This isn't the first time Rand was quoted on the show...the last time, it was a great quote which I'm embarrassed to say I cannot repeat here accurately, because I can't recall it well enough...something about the lack of reason (or rationality) not being of any consequence to those who do not believe in it anyway...? (A little help with that one, too, folks, would be appreciated... :-)
