Sanction of the GE Victim
Posted by Peter Cresswell on 6/08/2004, 2:50pm
Several years ago I suggested in The Free Radical that the GE industry would happily shackle itself in an attempt to placate its opponents. In the August 1999 issue I wrote: "The regulatory compromises being accepted [by GE advocates] threaten to strangle this industry as effectively as they have the nuclear industry, and once again we will watch victims sanctioning their own destruction... If businessmen and scientists don't ... crusade for it rather than apologising as they are now, they will assuredly suffer 'death by a thousand cuts.' "

Sadly, that prediction is now coming true. The San Francisco Chronicle reports today that this 'strategy' of the GE advocates has "backfired horribly" and left the industry on the ropes. "The policies recommended by by the biotechnology industry ... were far more burdensome than could be justified on scientific grounds and often even more burdensome than proposals by regulators... Unrealistic and unnecessary regulatory requirements have created the foundation for various kinds of pseudo-crises that are precipitated whenever inconsequential transgression of the overly stringent rules occur ..."

The sanction provided by this victim offers yet another lesson for us all. If only the victims themselves would learn from such lessons.
