When considering a work of architecture you should definitely and as a minimum examine the floor plan and understand it. Architecture is a three-dimensional art, and proper appreciation of it only comes with appreciation of a work's three-dimensions.

As Le Corbusier used to say, the plan is the generator. The plan is analogous to the musical score - a perspective is analogous to a bar or two of music. A competent reader of the score can 'hear' the music in his head; however if all one hears is a bar or two we can know whether we might like something, but we certainly can't understand it.
