| | Tres,
Ouch. It hurts when outsiders come into your field -- actually, when you step into their field -- and they beat you at your own game. If I were still a devout Christian, and if I were visiting "Occupy NY", then I'd roll with an entourage of 3 or 4 Jesuit Priests as my theological bodyguards. Anyone who stepped to me with a bible verse/interpretation would get put down by my bodyguard "JPs" rather quickly and decisively (e.g.,):
You say sacrificial giving is generally good, or that love means to sacrifice? Well, I give you 1 Corinthians 13:3 (any sacrificial giving, because its contrary to what you love -- i.e., contrary to the hierarchy of what it is that you actually do value -- is nothing). Bam!
You think you can get salvation without knowing yourself well and without questioning the very existence of God or organized religion? Well, I give you 1 Timothy 4:13-16 (know yourself and thoroughly doubt all doctrine). Bam!
You think mere repentance saves you, rather than personal growth? Well, I give you 2 Peter 1:5-11 (you get your salvation through building up your own character by living well -- discovering and applying the right virtues and values -- as a human being on earth). Bam!
You think Jesus' death is what saves you, and not his life? Well, I give you 1 John 1:5-6 (you get your salvation through building up your own character ...). Bam!
You think it's good to fear God? Well, I give you 1 John 18 (fear is for sissies). Bam!
You have to know how to roll.
:-)
