I don't believe this - also what does it have to do with environmentalism?

Maybe nothing--but if the story is true, I can't help but think that the anti-human philosphy of that movement was a factor in the rise of this problem. I have already seen a comment against the use of pesticides to treat the condition.

One thing that makes this story sound doubtful is the fact that they are saying many different kinds of bugs are coming out of the same person. This just does not seem possible! Also, apparently some of the bugs are fully grown--yet insects such as ticks live in the open air and would not seem to be able to survive under the skin of someone. Many other questions arise that are not addressed in the reports.

On the other hand, some of the arguments used by the deniers set off alarm bells in my head.

This sounds too much like the 2006 movie Bug about such delusions.

Maybe they need a full body version of the Super Scalp brush.

I know there are boring parasites in Africa and other places, but I haven't heard of any in the US.

Note how the story, as it was reported, didn't give any hint of an explanation.  I found that extremely odd.  Either these people picked up something while traveling, or it's non sense.

I just discovered there is a mouse sneaking around my cupboards. Little bastard.

Go ahead, folks. LAUGH at the environmentalists.

But you had an OUNCE of inter-species COMPASSION, you would be horrified at the fate of thousands of cute polar bears that are dying on melting pack ice, due to Global Warming.

You just can't face the PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF, can you????

The news story twice showed the one woman swimming in a natural pool.  That would be one way to pick up parasites.

Also, this story is from Florida.  Though at least twice the voiceover referred to "thousands" of cases, it was not clear where they all are.  How many people in Minnesota are affected?

Notice that the one couple had their own binocular microscope.  In my childhood that would have been laboratory equipment.  So perhaps we just have a better way to get to the problem than in the past in which the actual cause would have been missed by the average afflicted person.  As for that "average afflicted person" it is not so surprising that with millions of people every statistically small malady shows up as "hundreds" or "thousands" of cases.

Teresa: There have always been boring parasites in the US; they usually go into politics. : )

I am almost certain this is a type of delusion.  Also, the only report is local news, about as unreliable a source as you can get, and quite susceptable to believing urban legends or just about anything.

Certainly, the only way I can believe there is anything to this is to assume that the news reports are garbled, edited, and compressed into incoherence. There are just too many questions I would want to ask. My thought that there might be some truth to the reports is based on a general impression only.

But I do not dismiss it at this point, because--as we know--it is entirely possible that the reports are indeed garbled, edited, and compressed.
