| | As Jennifer pointed out, this was on tv the other night. And I went to a Greek Festival this weekend, so I'm feeling very OPA!
I did enjoy this movie. It helps remind me to appreciate my family despite all the weirdness. Sometimes, they're just crazy--they don't necessarily do it merely to annoy me! Not necessarily.
This scene really touched me. The daughter was trying to understand why her dad was having such a hard time with her marrying a non-Greek. Her mom reminded her of why they had come to America in the first place, to escape a society that told them what to do all the time. In America, there was freedom to be themselves, to celebrate their culture. And, so, too, in their house--she, the daughter, was free to be herself and did not have to live her life according to the wishes of her parents.
It struck me, now that I'm a parent, that this so important to remember. Maybe THE most important thing to keep in mind as our kids grow up. Our children's lives are their own to live, even though we gave them that life. I wish my parents would remember this simple and powerful message. I don't intend to forget it and thereby spoil that very gift I want them to treasure.
