I remember so well how a guest on that occasion wondered what Ayn would have to say about taxes being 'too high'.  Ayn retorted without hesitation, "80$ is not too high if the issue is defense for yoursurvival, but fot most other things 20% is much too high."
Her words about 80% have worn their way into my mind through repetition, in connection with  the current Iraq affair.  Of course!  If all is at wirk, even 90% is not too high.  Whet her she would have thought the Iraq matter was to be counted among the 80% I do not know, but ai suspect that she would have.  If the aim of the Islamo-fascists is to get rid of all of us, as they repeatedly declare, and if they have not only the will but the ability (they will have nukes soon enough at any rate), then 80% is not at all too much!  People were always thinking that she exaggrated, but as I've said to many people in the intervening years, "I've told you a million times not to exaggerate!"

John, your book made me a libertarian back when I was a sophomore in high school. You played a huge part in my journey to Objectivism. Words fail me, so all I'll say is, thank you.

What strikes me about this is that the standard leftist position is exactly the opposite. Tax rates of any amount are OK if they are spent on social programs.

Welcome Mr. Hospers.

You say that the militant Islamists will have nukes soon enough...how do you think that will play itself out? What will be their #1 target? Israel? NYC? What countries have nukes today and which are getting close?

It's a shock that no nuclear attacks have occurred since 1945. 60 years? I can't imagine humanity will make it another 60 nuke-free.

John

I posted this quote of yours to provide some counterpoint to a certain faction of anarchists who have started to post on SOLO and believe that no government actions can ever be moral, that minor infractions on civil liberties are of greater import than terrorist attacks on the citizens of western countries, and that we should appease foreign aggressors if they can't be fought without even the smallest violations of the non-initiation of force principle domestically.

What's even worse is that they disingenuously try and co-opt Ayn Rand into their views. See for example this thread.

Great to have you aboard. It was an honour to hear you speak at SOLOC4.

Look, I'd just like to know who this crazy woman is, making this outrageous suggestion that it's appropriate for defense spending to be raised by taxation! And even - horror of horrors- taxation without limit! She's obviously just another Big Government Socialist in disguise, who thinks the ends justify the means and has no qualms about such initation of force on free individuals!

;-)

What a pleasant surprise that my first experience on this site should coincide with John Hospers' appearance! Your Introduction to Philosophical Analysis is among my favorite texts, very lucidly presented. (I hope I'm remembering that correctly, as the book was lost with many others in a move and not since replaced.)

When I encountered your book, I was pleased that a serious philosophical text gave Ayn Rand's thinking some consideration.
