Nature, given the gaps in the Doctor Who seasons, please help us to recall which actor played the Doctor for this story.

Never mind, I did a Google search and found this site:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/episodes/endoftheworld.shtml

No wonder I had no recollection of it!  I have not seen it yet.

Reminds me of Ian Fleming:

I'm not sure of the likely airdates in other countries but you guys are all in for a real treat, including a major long term plot twist (concerning the other Time Lords) in that second episode Nature has quoted. We're three episodes in to the new season in the UK and so far it's been just extraordinary - as it stands, Christopher Eccleston is shaping up to be one of the best Doctors ever, and the chemistry between him and Bille Piper is absolutely spot on.

Out of interest, may I ask how many Dr Who fans are there on SOLOHQ? I'm already aware of Cam Pritchard, he and I have already discussed the new show on his blog for those who are interested.

Nature, brilliant quote by the way :-)

I was a major fan in high school to the point that a few buddies and I made a video story for a senior project.  Our advisor urged us to change names of characters and so forth -- I suppose for concerns over copyrights -- but it still proved a blast.  Here are a couple of stills:

Luke, I wish you hadn't posted the photo on the right. We get enough complaints about being "Randroids."

Luke,

That looks like it was great fun!! Will you be following the new series? There is a good fan site at Outpost Gallifrey, they are keeping track of the agreements to show the new episodes in other countries. There's nothing official about the US yet but a deal definitely seems to be in the pipeline :-)

The first Dr. Who epp I saw was of the new series epp 'leaked' last month. I'm a huge scifi fan but I've never watched a British show before (I've been downloading these). It's alright I, its just so...British I guess? I don't like mixing my tv show types, for me a real scifi show is a drama first, maybe have a few humorous scenes. Comedy and scifi don't go together and if they do, it can at least be funny.

Then again I'm not a good judge of British humor, a Southern accent is normal for me so the British just sound funny period.

I'm a Dr Who fan. At least I was when I was younger, that's why I am still hanging on.

I thought the first episode was very good, the new doctor is not really Ecclestone, but Russel T Davies, whose writing shines through. That's why I don't really care if Ecclestone leaves. Maybe they will replace him with someone as eccentric and quirky as Tom or Colin Baker? I hope so.

By the way I heard on the news that apart from the 13 episodes there will also be a christmas special.

I vote for Bill Nighy as the next Doctor. He is already pretty eccentric!

I heard on the news that the role has been offered to David Tennant, who plays in Cassanova, also written by Russel T Davies.

Still, I think Bill Nighy would be a great choice to play the doctor :-)

Of course if Tennant turns it down, he could offer to the other star of Casanova, Peter O Toole :-)

Apparently Eccleston said ages ago that he would only do one season...the BBC's even apologised to him for the way the information was released!

Whoever ends up playing the tenth Doctor I hope we get a proper regeneration sequence. It's annoying enough not knowing what happened to Doctor number 8 (Paul McGann from the 1996 special). Perhaps in the Christmas episode?

I was at first wondering whether they would actually count Paul McGann as a doctor having just appeared in a TV movie.

Peter Cushing from the Movie "Daleks: Invasion Earth" is never counted as a Doctor.

Marcus,

The Peter Cushing Daleks movies (there were actually two...) were both essentially big screen remakes of the first two Daleks stories from the tv shows that featured the first Doctor William Hartnell, so those movies are not part of the "official" BBC show continuity. The 1996 tv movie was a BBC/Fox co-production intended as an effort to revive the show, and started with seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy basically getting himself shot dead. Thus, that tv movie does follow the continuity of the BBC tv shows (with the exception that the TARDIS control room suddenly looked much much more impressive...). Russell T Davies has made clear that Eccleston's Doctor is the ninth incarnation, with Hartnell through McGann being the first through the eighth.

Matthew, I just finished reading pages and pages of "catching up" material from Outpost Gallifrey after bookmarking it.  Thank you for bringing it to my attention!  My brain is full now, so I will excuse myself while my subconscious digests all this.

Supposedly the forthcoming final book in the BBC's series of Eighth Doctor Adventures (The Gallifrey Chronicles) is going to tie in to the beginning of the new series. So it's conceivable that the regeneration may occur at the end of that book.

You're welcome - I'm glad you found it useful.

Nature,

That's very interesting, though personally I do think it should be shown on screen! :-)

Ha! The BBC has listed the possible contenders to play the next Dr Who.

And guess what, David Baker was right, Bill Nighy is on the list!
