It worked on me every time.  This explains my reluctance to dismiss it.  Note that your quote refers to "behavior" and not "morale."  Better methods of discipline may exist, but your quote remains true for many people much of the time.

Luke,

A branding iron would have worked every time. Better methods do exist, but the fact that branding irons also work remains true.
