Mutually, Teresa, and thanks to those who emailed me in private.

Oh, and I voted Welles, but I really like Bogart as well.

Stewart had a great career, I considered adding him to the list. But he seemed more often to play himself than any character. (I guess you could say this for Archibald Leach as well.) I am sure I will kick myself for having missed others. Stewart and Gary Cooper are the two I considered but omitted.

Trevor Howard and Joseph Cotten should have been on the list, but I figured they might not be well enough known. Here the British Howard consoles the American Cotten in The Third Man

I picked Tom Hanks just to get even with Ted for dissing the man in the first place as I do happen to like Tom Hanks and do not consider him a zombie.

I like(d) Heath Ledger.  A Knight's Tale is one of my favorite movies.   I voted for Gregory Peck, however, only because of his portrayal of Atticus. "That'll do, Scout."

Peck had a number of great movies - The Big Country, Moby Dick, Old Gringo, Gentleman's Agreement, MacKenna's Gold, Captain Hornblower - just to name a few.....

Cary Grant (aka Archibald Leach) brought an almost magical quality to his roles that is unmatched in the history of cinema.  He was Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite actor, and starred in many of Hitchcock’s films.  Apparently Ian Fleming had Grant in mind when he created the character of James Bond.  (It is rumored that Grant worked for British intelligence during World War II.)  Charade is one of my all-time favorite films.  Grant was never given an Oscar, largely because he was considered a maverick in Hollywood—one of the first actors to work independently of the major studios.  He was a good friend and supporter of Ronald Reagan until his death in 1984.

Hmm, is "getting even with" someone an objectivist vale, Luke? (Don't answer that one, Zantonavitch!) Remember that line from the Fountainhead where Toohey asks Roark what Roark thinks of him, and Roark says he contemplates revenge in every waking thought?

I sanctioned you in the hope that it will bring a smile to your avatar's face.

After 9 months of "do you recycle?" I thought a little levity was in hand. Hanks isn't at all bad for a zombie.

Ted, justice is part of the Objectivist ethics.

I am not Howard Roark and you are not -- I hope! -- Ellsworth Toohey.

Hence, the results will be different.

A is A.

Rodney, it would be easier simply to post a poll of favorite dead actresses. (A lot of good ones are still alive.)

I like:

Alida Valli
Rita Hayworth
Katherine Hepburn
Barbara Stanwyck
Rosalind Russell
Bette Davis

I'm no great fan of Audrey's, but do respect her talent. Too waifish for my taste.

Here are my favorite living actress and actor, Gary Oldman and Lena Olin, in a racy fanvid of the movie Romeo is Bleeding from youtube. The lyrics are not suitable for mixed company. Oldman is a corrupt NYC cop, Olin a Russian mob assassin.

Well, I'm a Tom Hanks fan.  Loved him in Apollo 13 and Castaway in particular.  Ted, you had me so concerned when you posted this poll, I immediately went off to deadoraliveinfo.com to check on Tom's well-being!

My apologies, Laure et aliis.

I think my dislike may in part be due to the roles in which he has been cast. I hated Big and Philadelphia and all his roles from Splash to Bonfire of the Vanities. I have not seen Gump or Apollo 13 or Castaway, mostly due to him being cast. Perhaps this has become for me a self-fulfilling animosity? He certainly did not hamstring Da Vinci Code or Catch Me If You Can, both of which I had to be talked into watching since he was in those films. He simply strikes me as a schmoo.
