Given some of the pronounced hostility between Objectivists and Libertarians, I wanted to post this poll to measure actual sentiments.

Same principle as with listing in atheist organizations. Many atheists or libertarians aren't Objectivist - but we might be able to get some who are looking for solid philosophical basis interested in it.

Advertising everywhere would be beneficial, no?

Would the voters for "Detrimental" care to elaborate?

Given the resources, I'd advertise in The Village Voice and in the Christian Science Monitor. Some people actually read widely and even read - shudder - opposing viewpoints. The only question is one of limited resources.

Yes, except for advertising under NAMBLA, PETA or the ACLU (or any obviously anti-reason/self/freedom banner) how could any publicity hurt? The real question is one of resources and target audiences. The principle in advertising is, ceteris paribus, larger audience=larger response. Those who are either uninterested or those who find "sanctioning" "non-orthodox" groups by merely advertising, when there is some overlap, will select themselves out.

A good marketer doesn't winnow before he sows.

I found Rand through the rock-band Rush, for gosh sakes.

And if Caress of Steel is my favorite album, does that mean I have a malevolent sense of life?

I think I'm going bald!

I use to work for Cato; helped plan the Atlas Shrugged 40th anniversary event when I was there in conjunction with the then Institute for Objectivist Studies; am still a Cato scholar; have worked for years with and highlighted in our magazine other friendly groups like the Institute for Justice, Competitive Enterprise Institute -- our D.C. office use to be in their suite, and others in this country and around the world. Indeed, our group was founded when David Kelley dared to speak at the Laissez-Faire Supper Club, which was blacklisted by ARI, and thus was founded on the principle of working with or at least communicating others on selected matters when its in our self-interest; it's a shame that ARI still refuses even to communicate with groups with which they have many things in common and which could benefit by a better understanding of Objectivism.

While I can imagine not working with certain groups for various reasons, I can't see an argument for ruling out working with others on principles.
