| | Now there is a loaded question!!!
And quite a complicated one beneath the surface actually.
I do not consider myself an activist -- yet I write on this forum, I spread my ideas, I apply what I've learned about rational living and try to share it. In some ways this would class me as an activist -- but I will say that my apparent activism is only a side effect of simply living my life as I want to live it. I don't feel any obligation (or worse, DUTY) to share my thoughts on life, but I WANT to for the simple reason that I think I'm right and love to find ways to expand on what I've learned and perhaps learn even more by interactions with other people.
If I can be a catalyst for someone to find their own sense of life, fine -- but it is not the goal of my efforts. If someone else happens to provide a catalyst for me to think and expand on some topic, I'm thrilled and have been repaid for my own efforts. Very much a trader situation with others who share aspects of a certain sense of life. There is a mutual exchange as far as I'm concerned and it is born of the natural tendancy of Man to learn, share information and improve his life. Activism isn't an end in itself -- it shouldn't be a job with the sole purpose of changing other people's minds or even leading them to what we think is 'right'. Somehow, that is a doomed formula to me!
I am not actively seeking to change anyone's mind about anything, but feel that what I've learned can be of use to other people who are also groping for rational answers and might just need some validation for their questions or efforts, some clues to formulate their own ideas and conclusions. The more people around me that are rational, the happier I am. *grin*
Besides, I just like to write!
However, all that being said, I'll admit that there is a bias to my answer. In many ways, activism just has a bad reputation because of the various groups like PETA, environmentalists and the like.
Activism is about being active-minded and passionate about living life, and so therefore, in that context, I'm very much an activist. *grin*
See my article on activism here on SOLOHQ - titled Forking Your Own Bronc. (Oh yes, a shameless plug for myself. :)
