Now scientists create a sheep that's 15% human
Scientists have created the world's first human-sheep chimera - which has the body of a sheep and half-human organs.
The sheep have 15 per cent human cells and 85 per cent animal cells - and their evolution brings the prospect of animal organs being transplanted into humans one step closer.
Animal rights activists fear that if the cells get mixed together, they could end up with cellular fusion, creating a hybrid which would have the features and characteristics of both man and sheep.

I think that the day isn't too far off when at birth a child will have samples of all their organs taken to create animals with clones of their organs for possible transplantation in the future. Maybe this is what the allusion to 'Animal Farm' is at the end of the article.

So human cells aren't animal cells, huh?

One could say that my body, excluding perhaps its H2O content and some trace elements, is made up of 50% animal atoms and 50% vegetable atoms, if half of what I eat is meat and half plant matter. But that wouldn't tell you much about me at all.

Knowing that this creature has 15% human cells doesn't say anything about the structure of its organs. And indeed, I am unaware of any cell types which most mammals don't share. A Lego car built out of 85% red Legos and 15% blue Legos is still a car.

Baby Is Born Half White And Half Black

What gives any body the right to decide which sex this highly evolved human will be?  It might want to have sex with men and women and possibly impregnate itself .

What right will be afforded to the animal huma hybrids that have human cognition?

OK CATO ITS A JOB FOR YOU!

Silas, we will all fight to the death for your right to impregnate yourself, any time you like.

Silas:

The YIKES vid was interesting, but, hermaphrodites and other genetic/developmental accidental anomolies have been known in medicine for quite a while. Though clinicians use the term 'chimera' in these intra-species dysfunctionally-developed cases, such is not really what this thread's about.

Sam was asking about inter-species genetic crossings where 'chimera' has a completely new, different, and deeper (re purposefully-done) 'ethical' concern.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Jay Leno in his monologue was jesting on the subject and said since the sheep were part human that the farmers would now have to take them to dinner.

I admit I'm confused about the topic the subject is intertwined with to many other variables.

Lol talk about quick wit !

I have enjoyed my stay here but I feel I have over stayed my welcome.

It's been fun.

I have views that are not the norm and I'm ostracized by both ends and the middle.

I tip toe through the tulips and gain insight wherever and it has been unbelievable and when I tell of the life experience that I have had people tell me that I need to quit telling so many lies.  (not the people of this forum)

Off the the next adventure.

Hybrid embryos get go-ahead

The first kind of hybrid allowed under the bill, known as a chimeric embryo, is made by injecting cells from an animal into a human embryo. The second, known as a human transgenic embryo, involves injecting animal DNA into a human embryo.

The third, known as a cytoplasmic hybrid, is created by transferring the nuclei of human cells, such as skin cells, into animal eggs from which almost all the genetic material has been removed.   This is this type of human-animal embryo that is being developed in British universities.

Scientists say that developing these embryos will provide a plentiful source of stem cells - immature cells that can develop into many different types of tissue - for use in medical research.

UK Scientists get green light for half animal, half human embryos.

British scientists will be allowed to research devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s using human-animal embryos, after the House of Commons tonight rejected a ban.

Cautionary Chimera

Dr Bruce Lahn of Sun Yat-sen University created this chimera of rodent species from the genera Mus musculus (house mouse) and Apodemus sylvaticus (wood mouse). It is the result of injecting Mus embryos with Apodemus cells. This results in a patchwork animal with each cell or tissue derived from one dividing cell line either fully Mus or Apodemus in nature. There is no blending of cells themselves or of genetic material. As you can see, the result is "monstrous" in that symmetry is lost. Note the right eye is derived from the larger Apodemus while the left eye is derived from the smaller Mus. Such chimerism in, for example, a Chimp-human chimera might lead to a child crippled by having one human leg and one chimp leg. The facial effects would certainly be disturbing. While the appearance and biomechanics of a chimera may be sub-optimal, such a being might show an analog of what is called hybrid vigor. Given that the animal in effect has two genomes, any genetic defects present in one genome but not in the other might be compensated for in the other. If the house mouse cells can't metabolize sugar, the non-diabetic wood mouse cells might be able to do so. There could also be a weakness if the genotypes from the two different species have different metabolic optima. Imagine that house mouse cells work best with a 100 degree body temperature and those of the wood mouse work best with a 90 degree body temperature. Since the organism as a whole might have a 96 degree body temperature, the house mouse cells might always be suffering from a chill with the wood mice cells always functioning as if feverish.

These experiments are fascinating - in mice. A human that looked like this mouse would have a good court case to sue his creators.
