We just got a new CEO today. In his intro speech he mentioned he was a philosophy major and promised to quote Hegel on a regular basis. I never studied philosophy. Can anyone point me to a "Cliff's Notes" guide to Hegel online somewhere?

All I know about the 19th centure Germans is that they were mostly subjectivists. Right?

J.Z.

I have a love/hate opinion of the guy.

For instance, I love this -

"Now this is Freedom, exactly. For if I am dependent, my being is referred to something which I am not; I cannot exist independently of something external. I am free, on the contrary, when my existence depends on myself."

But I hate this -

"All the worth which the human being possesses, all spiritual reality, he possesses only through the State... For Truth is the unity of the universal and subjective will; and the Universal is to be found in the State, in its laws, its universal and rational arrangements. The State is the Divine Idea as it exists on earth. We have in it, therefore, the object of history in a more definite shape than before; that in which Freedom obtains objectivity. For Law is the objectivity of the Spirit."

(sound of me gagging)

Ooooh! Somebody call Star! I just had an Objective Hate moment!

Anyway, get ready for some dialetical style discussions and try not to make any statements that come close to contradicting themselves. If he is a student of Hegel, he will be waiting to pounce.

More than likely your new boss is just being pretentious. As Hegel himself said -

"One man has understood me, and even he has not."

gw

p.s. - Oh, and one more thing. If the new C.E.O. comes up with anything resembling a 5 year plan...Run like hell!

OK. It turns out Hegel is the father of Dialectics. Wonderful :( This always seemed like a mystical concept to me.

I'd appreciate any more thoughts on Hegel from Oists. I need to arm my arsenal. I just love fighting with a CEO ;)
