I'm a little confused here.  This is news from 2006?  Can you provide any details or, I don't know, maybe a link to a news story?  Did Sarkozy and the Fifth Republic ban the play?  Was it Chirac?  Or is the news story a reference to the Saint-Genis-Pouilly, France trouble back in '05?  Of course, if you want to call something that happened in 2005 news, why not go back to 1993-4 when the play was banned in Geneva, Switzerland (Tariq was very much involved in that incident BTW) ?

AFAIK, Tariq Ramadan is not very well regarded by the French.  If he was successful in causing the French government to ban a Voltaire play, then I want more and better details.  I have a hard time believing the French banning one of their own at the urgings of a Swiss (?) citizen.

(edited to add the following:  I looked and looked and can't find anything regarding Voltaire being banned in France.  I did find this WSJ article that seems to show the French and the town of Saint-Genis-Pouilly staging the play in 2005 despite the Muslim protests.  Seems more of an example of French courage to me.   C'est la vie.   http://uniset.ca/terr/news/wsj_voltaire_mohammed.html)

Joshua, I suppose I should have posted this under some other heading. It was news to me, since I didn't know (or remember) that Voltaire had even written such a play, and I've read a lot of Voltaire. I came across the matter when following some links about Ramadan, and thought the matter worth mention. My understanding is that a performance of the play was stopped as recently as 2006 (hence obviously under Chirac - Sarkozy has debated against Ramadan in France) and the policy is of a piece with current "hate speech" nonsense. So noteworthy, if not breaking news.

Then do you have those links regarding Tariq Ramadan and the banning of Voltaire in France  handy?  As I said earlier, I cannot find any reference to a Voltaire play being banned in France.  If this is the case I'd really like to find more details.  The only things I could find regarding the Voltaire play, France, and Tariq Ramadan:

1.)  Tariq Ramadan was part of a campaign to prevent Hervé Loichemol from producing Voltaire's play Fanaticism, or Mahomet the Prophet in Geneva way back in 1993-4.  (Some say this was one of Tariq Ramadan's first steps to prominence as a Muslim spokesman in Europe.)

2.) The town of Saint-Genis-Pouilly, close to the Swiss border in the French alps, successfully produced the play in December 2005.  The play was produced despite protests by many Muslim groups.  There were some minor disturbances in the town but the play did go on.

Again, I can find no reference that any Voltaire play has been outlawed as hate speech in France.  Could you be mistaken?  Do you think you could have mis-read or mis-interpreted something somewhere?  Or could you provide a reference showing the French decision to include Voltaire and the Mahomet play as prohibited hate speech?
