As much as I loath to say it, I disagree. Time and time again, whenever Christian society’s become less religious, they become more statist. This journalist makes the fatal mistake of assuming that when most people give up their religion, they somehow become more rational. As bad as it is to kneel before some made up god, it’s much worse when people trade that in to kneel before a very real and very powerful state.

This ain’t the Middle Ages, it’s the governments that won’t leave you be, not the churches. I can deal with the church bells, turning into something like France I can’t.

Between 33 and 44% of Americans view themselves as Evangelical Christians, which is not only christianity, but fundamental and radical christianity. Religion is not dying in America, but has been growing since the 1980's, in a revival of religious ferver that some historians see as being the greatest religious revival since the second Great Awakening.
Religion is not something that can be abolished. Religion is the manifestation of man's father-complex due to his sense of fear and helplessness in the world. You have to remove irrationality from man to make him an atheist. You can not remove religion to make him rational.
Further more, by what means to do you propose to remove religion? Would they be wholly rational and ethical? The only ethical way to do so is to convince religious men of their error with a logical arguement. They're response will be that god is above Reason, (which would make wholly him unknowable and impercieveable to our minds but they ignore this.) Then how do you suggest to abolish religion? Somehow?

Jack, Hong asks for the facts on Hindus against Buddhists -- I ask for just the facts.

Evidence from Harris Polls indicates a decline in mysticism in the US -- in the last 7 years (from 84% mystical, to 70%). What do you make of that?

They have bigger shit to worry about in fucking Uganda.  No wonder it is in a newspaper there, they are looking to do that because it competes with the State.

I don't know if religion is dying or if it ever will. The two fastest growing religions in the world are also two of the scariest and most irrational. They are (somebody told me this so don't quote me) Islam and Mormonism. In light of this I see a very creative solution for the situation in the Middle East where two wrongs can make a right. Carpet bomb the whole place with Mormon missionaries! Either way we win. We have less Mo-mos knocking on our door or the Middle East turns into a nice big lovey-dovey bunch of middle-class kooks with "strong family values" or both.

There's an excellent essay by Douglas Adams (Of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame) about God as a cultural construct at:

Good luck is all I really have to say.  Separation of church and state especially does not apply to voters.  So many people base their lives around and upon religion, what would they have to live for????  It's a nice idealistic thought but um no, totally unrealistic.
