I'm very glad to see this, but after the buildup the problem is they posted them incompetently:

They are so small (twelve cartoons on one page with lots of unnecessary white space) that you can't make out what the are saying, can't read the print which is a vital part of most of them, can't even click on them to enlarge them or make them appear on another page. The whole point is, or should be, to disseminate and discuss them, allow other places to link to them, copy them, encourage site visits by word of mouth, etc.

Most of the text in the graphics is in Dutch, Phil.  I couldn't read it even if I could see it.

But they are pretty small. I would think they'd make um all huge to really make their point.

A few weeks back I googled them and there is a version in which the captions are in English, so ARI should have used those. And, yes you're right Teresa, in some cases, when making the cartoon larger you don't need the words.

Did anybody out there attend these events?  Did they get any media coverage?

By way of introduction, I'm the proud editor of the first magazine in America (to the best of my knowledge) to dare to publish the most controversial of the Danish cartoons RIGHT ON ITS FRONT COVER. (We reprint another one inside, too.)

By the way -- HERE IT IS:

I invite our subscribers to pay special heed to my editorial, "Cartoon Journalists" -- a scalding indictment of the moral cowardice and capitulation of the Western press on this vital free speech issue -- and Ed Hudgins's lengthy article, "The Jihad Against Free Speech," which takes on the jihadists and also examines incisively the meaning, and the limits, of tolerance in a free society.

Oh? You say that you aren't a subscriber?

Fool! Time for you to click here.

The New Individualist cover of the Danish cartoon of Muhammad is now posted in the preceding entry, which I've just edited to include the image.

I posted this entry so that it will come up on everyone's list of "new posts," and you can go check it out.

You can view the cover on The Objectivist Center/Atlas Society website at this link:
http://www.objectivistcenter.org/cth-13-1664-New_issue_of_The_New_Individualist_is_out_To_be_posted_soon.aspx

The entire issue will be posted on the website soon, after our members and subscribers have a bit of time to enjoy it exclusively as a reward for their loyalty!

Ed and Robert, normally I would think that mass distributing free copies of a small circulation intellectual magazine would result in too little "buzz" and new subscriptions to be worth the considerable expense. But imagine this magazine sitting in the student union or seen on college campuses. This cover can't be ignored by anyone who sees it. Mailings to newspaper and magazine editors and bloggers [both left and right!...the lefties one would hope to provoke] would be expensive, but in terms of bang for the buck this is potentially a "breakout" cover that no one else would do, that is timely, dramatic, bespeaks courage and principle, and will be hard to ignore...

...just a thought.

...Further brainstorming: Even just reprinting as a pamphlet copies of the cover and condensation of lead article (much cheaper to mass produce, as in the case of ISIL's single sheet, reduced print pamphlets which it has offset prints flimsy over a decade or two - million at pennies per copy). Single sheets in the tri-fold ISIL format are very effecitve, easy to carry always, and they give away at every event. Other than op eds, Oists always seem to want to write *long* and then sell everything for a high price. Pamphleteering works historically. Especially if you have a striking cover.

Robert B. And Ed H.,
I salute you for taking a noble stand against Islamic fundamentalism. The new cover of TNI is the best ever! I can't wait to read it.

Phil and Erik, thanks.

But...do you really want to be endorsing "wimps"?

Robert, I'm only doing it because I know you are spending time on the testicle growing machine. And

--- despite the fact that your econot blog, your many articles, your softspoken failure to ever condemn anyone or take a firm stand on anything over the years, your Keatingesque complaisance and shy tendency to fade into the background in any movement or issue and seek consensus...all clearly show what an appeaser you are ---

despite all that, I still have hopes for you.

Phil -- We are looking for ways to get copies of this issue before more peoples' eyes. For example, while we have members of Congress on our mailing list we're mailing this issue to all members of the House and Senate. We will also look into ways of getting the issue into the hands of sympathetic activities on university campuses.

We do have journalists/TV commentators on our comp list and will be looking for more to whom to send this issue. Since we're putting all this effort into producing a quality publication, it's worth spending money to promote it!

Keep your ideas coming!

Ed,

If you really want to get it talked about, send it to Muslim groups like CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations).

I don't know if I would do that, and I hope ARI and TOC are both taking certain security precautions, including how they open their mail. This is so obvious (and should not be aired in detail online), that I am sure they are smart enough to have thought of it. It is true that there is security in numbers, but in the U.S., we need more organizations to boldly publish to spread risk.
