Interesting soundbite but I didn't think Nicholson "won" the debate. Without reading more it is difficult to say. Certainly the modern RN and other UK forces put a great emphasis on developing leadership from the ground up rather than top down as seen in many communist and third world military structures.I imagine this is true of U.S. forces as well.

I put in a sound file from Radio4 about a week ago (Decline of the West) maybe they can't open it (or maybe it is very boring.....?)

Patrick O'Brians' novels are well researched and explain the structure of the RN at this time in great detail.

Hi David,

When I listened to your "decline of the west" sound file I got some speech about pensions.
Maybe the link has changed it's designation?

I wonder why you think that Nicholson lost the debate.
I think he made an interesting point that is probably valid.

The lack of interest here may be because it is considered too British a topic :-)
