YES!! After reading this, went and looked on TubePlus, and there it was to see - so saw it, and indeed was captivated by it from the beginning... what acting! no mugging, but true acting, and doing it well without hearing a sound! FANTASTIC movie...

I used the word 'likable' to describe the protagonist in this film. What made him likeable?

Several things. His joy of living. His character-- there is a scene early in the film when he is in a position to clearly take advantage of a young ingenue, a wanna be starlet on her way up(think "A Star is Born.") He catches her in his dressing room pretend 'making out' with his jacket, hanging on a rack. She is clearly smitten by him, the star of silent films. And instead of taking advantage of her...he gives her career advice, and her adoration of him is unrequited. This occurs at the very peak of his career as a 'Holleywoodland' star with star power, and you instantly find him admirable.

He also bears the downfall of his career, not perfectly, but with a kind of dignity and pride. He doesn't go down without a fight. He is not without his flaws, but he is admirable through the ordeal, and he does what he must to survive.

Hi, I came around this thread and really search about "The Artist". I found out that this is one of the best romantic classic movies. It is also said to be a valentine movie in which the actor is a bona fide matinee idol:) The movie looks interesting!
